Effects of Mood on Conversational Argument Acts and Sequences
The citizen questions model for redesigning political candidate debates
This study addresses declining participation in political debates and eroding public trust in their formats through communication design theory. We introduce the Citizen Questions Model (CQM), a designed intervention piloted with the Washington State Debate Coalition. The CQM restructures debate moderation and question sourcing through three stages: community surveys to identify voter priorities, bipartisan focus groups to refine these concerns i…
Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!”
The purpose of this field experiment was to examine whether food servers who used other-enhancement, opinion conformity, or humor would be rewarded with higher tips from restaurant customers than food servers who did not use such ingratiation tactics. Consistent with predictions, humor and simple opinion conformity resulted in significantly higher tip percentages compared to the control condition. In contrast, other-enhancement (i.e., compliments…
Nonverbal Communication in Political Debates
Nonverbal Communication in Political Debates presents a framework for understanding and analyzing the multiple ways that nonverbal behavior functions in political debates. In addition to addressing the ways in which politicians are presented and present themselves in debate broadcasts, the framework considers a wide array of strategic objectives and unintended consequences of candidates’ nonverbal behaviors. Along the way, the book examines theor…
Transitions in Polyamorous Identity and Intercultural Communication
This study examines the communicative strategies and nonmonogamous identity formation of individuals who are polyamorous. We investigate the identity management tactics that individuals who are polyamorous utilize to navigate a society in which monogamy and monosexuality are the norm. Interactions of individuals who are polyamorous within a mononormative society are treated as a type of intercultural communication due to the contrasting cultural …
Conversational Argument in Close Relationships
This article examines how people develop their ideas with each other through the use of argument sequences. First, we discuss the argumentative function of communication in close relationships. Second, we articulate the theoretic cornerstones of our research program. Here we present the basic premises of the theory of Minimally Rational Argument, which identifies conversational argument as a process of developing a definition of the relationship …
Romantic intent, relationship uncertainty, and relationship maintenance in young adults' cross-sex friendships
Romantic desire and relational uncertainty operate slightly differently in predicting the reported use of Common Maintenance Behaviors (CMBs) and Relationship-Specific Maintenance Behaviors (RSMBs). Cross-sex friendship dyads (n = 197) indicated their desire for a romantic relationship with each other, relationship uncertainty, and self-reported friendship maintenance behaviors. Romantic desire correlated positively with the maintenance behaviors…
Background Behavior in Live Debates
This study examined the effects of background nonverbal behavior displayed with the purpose of undermining one's opponent in live debates. Students participated as audience members in one of three versions of a live debate. In one version, the nonspeaking debater remained "stone faced" during her opponent's speech, while in the other two she displayed either occasional or nearly constant nonverbal disagreement. After viewing the debates, students…
Disconfirming communication and self-verification in marriage
This study examines the link between communication and self-verification in marriage. A theoretical model that explains the relationships among disconfirming communication, perceptions of self-confirmation, and marital satisfaction is proposed and tested. The demand/withdrawal conflict pattern in marriage is hypothesized to result in the disconfirmation of the demanding spouse's identity (i.e., feeling misunderstood). Furthermore, the affect of t…
Toward a theory of minimally rational argument
Whereas the investigation of argument in public discourse has long held prominent status in the field of communication, research on argument in interpersonal settings has only recently emerged. This article concerns how argument structures (i.e., simple, complex, jointly enacted, and eroded) are related to perceptions of communicator competence, communication satisfaction, and attraction. Our theoretic assumptions portray argument as convergence‐…
