Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected Indigenous populations, yet Métis-specific data remain limited. We described COVID-19-related experiences, physical and mental health, health behaviours, and socio-economic wellbeing among Métis people in Alberta (Canada) during the early pandemic. Methods: was a cross-sectional survey series conducted with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta. Self-id…
The association between cultural connectedness and health-related quality of life among Indigenous peoples in the Canzus countries
Cultural connectedness–the extent to which individuals feel connected to their culture through practices, language, traditions, and identity– is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of health among Indigenous peoples across the life course. High levels of cultural connectedness have been associated with improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Although several studies have examined this relationship, the evidence has not yet been …
Determinants of socioemotional and behavioral well-being among First Nations children living off-reserve in Canada
Few studies have focused on off-reserve Indigenous children and families. This nationally representative, cross-sectional study (data collected from 2006 to 2007) examined Indigenous- and non-Indigenous-specific determinants associated with positive socioemotional and behavioral well-being among First Nations children living off-reserve in Canada. The parents or other caregivers of 2990 two-to-five-year-old children (M = 3.65; 50.6% male) reporte…
Improving accessibility to radiotherapy services in Cali, Colombia
Traffic congestion significantly diminished accessibility to radiotherapy services, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. For instance, urban 20-min ACO by car dropped from 91% of Cali's urban population within a 20-min journey to the service during free-flow traffic to 31% during peak traffic for the week of 6-12 July 2020. Percentages represent the population within a 20-min journey by car from their residence to a radiotherapy service…
Access to Healthcare for Black Women in Alberta
Alberta is home to one of Canada's fastest growing populations of Black people, driven by an influx of African immigrants to major metropolitan areas such as Edmonton and Calgary. As the Black population in Alberta continues to grow, it is crucial to the well-being of these communities that we understand their health service needs. Black women are a vulnerable group within the Black population due to inequities in social determinants of health su…
Geography as a Determinant of Health
Respiratory diseases contribute to high healthcare utilization rates among children. Although social inequalities play a major role in these conditions, little is known about the impact of geography as a determinant of health, particularly with regard to the difference between rural and urban centers. A regional geographic analysis was conducted using health repository data on singleton births between 2005 and 2010 in Alberta, Canada. Data were a…
Geographic Inequalities of Respiratory Health Services Utilization during Childhood in Edmonton and Calgary, Canada
Young children are susceptible to respiratory diseases. Inequalities exist across socioeconomic groups for paediatric respiratory health services utilization in Alberta. However, the geographic distribution of those inequalities has not been fully explored. The aim of this study was to identify geographic inequalities in respiratory health services utilization in early childhood in Calgary and Edmonton, two major urban centres in Western Canada. …
Defining a complex intervention
The authors used a 5-round Delphi study with a panel of 7 experts in meditation research to achieve agreement on a set of criteria for a working definition of “meditation” for use in a comprehensive systematic review of the therapeutic use of meditation. Participants agreed that essential to a meditation practice is its use of (a) a defined technique, (b) logic relaxation, and (c) a self-induced state. Participants also agreed that a meditation p…
