  • Sidi Zin Archaeological Project

Open Access•Eslem Ben Arous, Nabiha Aouadi et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Referências: 5

The Sidi Zin Archaeological Project aims to bridge understanding of the Acheulean-Middle Stone Age transition in northern Tunisia, a relatively understudied region in the context of hominin evolution. The Sidi Zin locality will provide chronological, palaeoenvironmental, geomorphological and cultural insights into Acheulean and Middle Stone Age occupations in Tunisia

  • Logiques pastorales du Maghreb holocène extraites d'une anthropologie de l'image

Open Access•Lotfi Belhouchet, Colette Roubet•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2024

The concept of the anthropology of image is tested on visual representa- tions from the Atlas range of the Maghreb during the Middle Holocene . The objective is to identify unsuspected symbolic behavio urs. By applying this interpretative model to the analysis of visual representations from the transition period between a hunter-gatherer economy and a food - producing economy, i.e. the 6th-4th millennia cal BC, this approach, which invites the di…

  • The status of minority species and young individuals of the terrestrial malacofauna in Capsian and Neolithic populations in eastern Maghreb

Open Access•Ismail Saafi, Nabiha Aouadi et al.•ARTICLE•Paléo•2023

The rammadiyet (or “escargotières”) in the Eastern Maghreb are enormous shell-midden complexes made by people during the Capsian Epipalaeolithic and the Neolithic. Mollusc assemblages in all rammadiyet are dominated by between one to four land snail species. Other, rarer – minority - species, and young land snails are present in all these sites. Of these minority and young molluscs, only large species, such as Cornu aspersum, could have contribut…

  • New insights into the late Middle Stone Age occupation of Oued el Akarit, southern Tunisia

    Open Access•Nick Barton, Lotfi Belhouchet et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2021•Citada por: 5•Referências: 18

This article reports on a new project to investigate the activities of early Homo sapiens in the area of the Chotts ‘megalake’ in southern Tunisia. Excavations in 2015 and 2019 at Oued el Akarit revealed one of a number of Middle Stone Age (MSA) horizons near the top of a long sequence of Upper Pleistocene deposits. The site identified as Oued el Akarit ( Sondage 8 ) consists of lithic artefacts, bone fragments of large ungulates and pieces of os…

  • Changing Plant-based Subsistence Practices among Early and Middle Holocene Communities in Eastern Maghreb

    M Portillo, Jacob Morales et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2020•Citada por: 6•Referências: 11

The eastern Maghreb is a key area for understanding environmental and cultural dynamics during the early and middle Holocene. Capsian populations from around 10000–7500 cal BP were among the last foragers in the region. Capsian sites are known as escargotières (land shell middens), and locally called rammadiyat (meaning ashy mound). As taphonomic conditions in Capsian open-air sites generally favour the preservation of resistant materials such as…

Malacological studies using land-snail shells found on archaeological sites are very scarce in the Maghreb, although such remains are the main constituent of Holocene sites known locally as rammadiyet. In this paper, the open-air prehistoric sites studied belong to the Upper Capsian culture. The Capsian culture is one of the Epipalaeolithic cultures found in the Maghreb and is inherent to Tunisia and eastern Algeria. Capsian open-air sites are hu…
