Three-year assessment of indoor air quality and preservation strategies at the Museo del Violino in Cremona (Italy)
Distinct strategy using an integrated methodology of innovative and traditional techniques for discriminating superimposed historical inks in revised manuscripts
This study concerns a non-invasive, multi-analytical methodology proposed to overcome legibility limitations in compromised handwritten parts of historical manuscripts. In such official documents, literary works, or personal letters, ink traces may be revised after the original draft through overwriting, crossing out, or erasure. The inks used for these later modifications often closely resemble those of the original text in both appearance and c…
The Pompeian Musical Instruments at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (Mann)
This paper gives a general overview and presents some preliminary results of an interdisciplinary project started in 2022, whose purpose is to document, study, preserve, and promote the Pompeian musical instruments kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (Italy). Specific attention is paid to the origin of this collection on the basis of archival investigations, which help shed light on the pathways of musical artefacts from excavati…

Metal Fragments of Roman Pipes from Pompeii
This work reports the study of metal fragments from Roman pipes excavated from the archaeological site of Pompeii and currently preserved in the deposits of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN). The Roman pipe, called the tibia, is a reed wind musical instrument similar to the Greek aulos. It can be made of wood, bone, and/or metal. Materials consisting of metal Cu-based alloys were excavated from archaeological burial environments…
Back to black
An assemblage of black-appearing glass objects (predominantly beads) that is dated to the 9th–7th centuries BCE and found in Iron Age contexts of Southern Etruria and Latium (central Italy) was analysed using portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The analytical approach allowed us to discuss the technology of glass-making in a period of relevant tech…
Retentive bio-based chemical gel for removing glues from water-sensitive wooden artworks
Aged animal glues degrade and weaken over time, resulting in flakes and cracks on the material employed by wooden manufacturers and luthiers. Because of this deterioration, conservators and restorers remove aged water-soluble glues with a water swab, smoothing enough to clean them mechanically and putting on new reversible glues. However, it raises the question of whether a water swab can control moisture delivery while removing glue from wood, a…
It is not crystal clear
The Iron Age was a period of change, with many innovations in the glass-making technology. The chemical composition of the set of objects considered in the present study demonstrates the diversity of the raw materials used and the depth of knowledge about the manipulation of glass appearance in the eighth-sixth centuries BCE. The study was carried out using fibre optics reflection spectroscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry at the m…
The Non-Invasive Characterization of Iron Age Glass Finds from the “Gaetano Chierici” Collection in Reggio Emilia (Italy)
This work reports the results of the analyses performed on a set of glass finds from the “Gaetano Chierici” collection in the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia. Forty-eight typologically heterogeneous glass finds were included in the list of the analyzed objects, dating from the fifth century BCE to the first century CE. The objects primarily consisted of glass beads; however, bangles, pinheads, and one vessel fragment were also included in the set.…
Non-invasive identification of red and yellow oxide and sulfide pigments in wall-paintings with portable ER-FTIR spectroscopy
Scientific interest in analytical tools that enable reliable, repeatable, and rapid measurements without sampling is growing in the field of cultural heritage. Therefore, improving the use of methods that permit an efficient characterization of a wide range of materials through non-invasive and portable instruments, such as spectroscopies, is currently in high demand. This work is focused on the non-invasive study and identification of selected r…
