Estimating a Mortality Profile of Fisher-Gatherers in Brazil Using Cementochronology
The evolution of nomadic collectors' fertility and mortality before the agriculture invention in independent centers 10,000 years ago is still debated. Skeletal samples are the only way to observe prehistoric demographic patterns directly. Each assemblage is critical for direct investigation since pre-farming groups exhibit high residential mobility. Cabeçuda is a funerary mound (sambaqui) in Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Its occupation (4,180BP-…

Cementochronology, to cut or not to cut
One of the continuing problems in paleopathology and paleoepidemiology is an inability to accurately age adult skeletons. Accurate age estimations are critical to the proper evaluation of population health and are necessary in circumventing certain aspects of the osteological paradox. Cementochronology is most likely the only age indicator in anthropology that directly considers a continuously growing tissue and does not require either complex st…

Bilateral fractures of the scapula
Palaeocytology in skeletal remains
The relatively elusive nature of preserved human cells in fossilised tissues was recognised prior to the description of fossilised sickle cells by Maat ( 1991 ) and Maat & Baig ( 1991 ). Preserved neural cells were also noted in mummified brain tissues by Hauswirth et al . ( 1991 ) and Doran et al . ( 1986 ). Exceptional circumstances of preservation were used to explain these rare observations (Briggs & Kear, 1993 ). In this study, dental calcul…
A palaeopathological case of a right maxilla's cemento-ossifying fibroma
Cemento-ossifying fibromas (COFs) are rare benign tumours affecting the maxilla and the mandible. The COF, of nonodontogenic origin, consists of a heterogeneous mixture of bone tissues and cementum. The skeleton of burial 154 excavated from the site of Magnicourt- en-Comté (Pas-de-Calais) has been studied palaeopathologically. The cemetery is dated from the Merovingian period (6th-7th century AD) and included 262 burials. In this study, we focus …
Maladie hyperostosique et maladie goutteuse, une diathèse familiale en Normandie
The architectural analysis and the complete archaeological survey of the old Saint Pierre parish church in Thaon (Calvados, France), dated to between the 7th and the 18th centuries, are in progress. Within the 12th century choir, fifteen burials have been excavated; all of them revealed mature skeletons. Four of these skeletons present features of hyperostosic disease. Besides hyperostosic disease, three of them display the features of erosive po…

Mortalité maternelle et périnatalité au premier millénaire à Lisieux (Calvados, France)
The complete excavation of a large suburban necropolis in Lisieux (Calvados, France) has brought to light two chronologically distinct, apparently unconnected cemeteries. The first was in use for just over one century, from the beginning of the 4th century A.D. to the early 5th century A.D. The second cemetery, covering a smaller area on the same site, lasted from the second half of the 6th century A.D. to the beginning of the 9th century A.D. In…
Rickets and child abuse
The burial of a child of two years of age from the 4th century site of Lisieux-Michelet (Calvados, France) was examined for bone hyperplasia and a variety of mechanical deformations recognized in association with skeletal trauma. Results of DNA analysis of bone using the PCR method identified this child as female. Microscopic features of the teeth (interglobular dentine) and a sample taken from the tibia conclusively determined that this child su…
Microscopic evidence for Paget's disease in two osteoarchaeological samples from early northern France
Paget's disease is a chronic condition of unknown cause localized to one or more bones of the human skeleton. It is basically an abnormal and excessive remodelling of bone, alternating phases of active bone resorption and formation and quiescent phases of diminished bone turnover. This combination produces a diagnostic pathologic appearance characterized by irregular bony fragments with a thickened and disorganized trabecular pattern (mosaic). To…

Two Roman and medieval cases of symmetrical erosive polyarthropathy from Normandy
With continued archaeological discoveries of skeletal remains in the USA and Europe, discussion of the possible aetiology for recognized cases of symmetrical erosive polyarthropathy include the spondylarthropathies and rheumatoid arthritis. One skeleton from the fourth century site of Lisieux and a second from the eleventh century site of Rouen are characterized by numerous symmetrical marginal erosions, primarily involving the metacarpophalangea…

Microradiographs of leprosy from an osteoarchaeological context
Microradiographs of early French medieval skeletal material diagnosed with leprosy show specific microscopic alterations, including isolated destruction, isolated bone formation and a combination of both processes, generally referred to as concentric remodelling. New bone deposition on the tibial diaphysis appears to follow the same processes. These observations parallel Coutelier's descriptions of bone remodelling observed in cases of amputated …
Trace elements in palaeopathology
Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) of the bones of a 6th century case (AD) of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) showed high levels of Zn, Mn and K in the periosteal new bone. The concentration of Zn in the periosteal new bone appeared to be biogenetic in origin and connected with active mineralization processes in the abnormal bone tissue. Manganese and potassium concentrations were, at least partly, related to diagenetic processes
