  • Simulating the Genetics Clinic of the Future — whether undergoing whole-genome sequencing shapes professional attitudes

    Open Access•Minna Brunfeldt, Harriet J A Teare et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2022

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) can provide valuable health insight for research participants or patients. Opportunities to be sequenced are increasing as direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing becomes more prevalent, but it is still fairly unusual to have been sequenced. We offered WGS to fourteen professionals with pre-existing familiarity with an interest in human genetics - healthcare, science, policy and art. Participants received a hard drive conta…

  • Rare diseases

Open Access•Biruté Tumiene, Ulf Kristoffersson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2021

  • Genetics in an isolated population like Finland

Open Access•Helena Kääriäinen, Juha Muilu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2017

A unique genetic background in an isolated population like that of Finland offers special opportunities for genetic research as well as for applying the genetic developments to the health care. On the other hand, the different genetic background may require local attempts to develop diagnostics and treatment as the selection of diseases and mutations differs from that in the other populations. In this review, we describe the experiences of resear…

  • Genetic causal beliefs about morbidity

Open Access•Ari Haukkala, Hanna Konttinen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Despite increased public discussion of genomics, the relative proportion of those who endorse genetic factors as the most important cause of morbidity has remained low. However, within this group beliefs about benefits of health behavior changes have become more positive. This could indicate that increase in genomic health information does not lead to more negative appraisals of efficacy of lifestyle changes

  • Definitions of genetic testing in European legal documents

Open Access•Orsolya Varga, Sirpa Soini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2012

  • Community genetics. Its definition 2010

    Open Access•Leo P ten Kate, Lihadh Al‐Gazali et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2010

This paper presents a definition of the medical field of community genetics. It starts with a brief historical overview, defines the requirements for an adequate definition, presents the definition, and discusses the constituent parts of the definition

  • Points to consider in assessing and appraising predictive genetic tests

Open Access•Wolf Rogowski, Wolf H Rogowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2010

The use of predictive genetic tests is expanding rapidly. Given limited health care budgets and few national coverage decisions specifically for genetic tests, evidence of benefits and harms is a key requirement in decision making; however, assessing the benefits and harms of genetic tests raises a number of challenging issues. Frequently, evidence of medical benefits and harms is limited due to practical and ethical limitations of conducting mea…

  • Scope of definitions of genetic testing

    Open Access•Jorge Pinto‐Basto, Jorge Pinto-Basto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2010

  • Expertise, empathy and ethical awareness

Open Access•Elina Rantanen, Seppo Pontinen et al.•ARTICLE•New Genetics and Society•2009

Along with the increase in genetic testing, it has become ever more important to assess the meanings attributed to genetic information in healthcare and in society. The objectives of this article are: (1) to review international guidelines pertaining to genetic counseling; (2) to analyze how genetic information is constructed in these documents; and (3) to summarize how these constructions affect the ideals and practice of genetic counseling. Gui…
