This article analyzes the tensions between traditional Wimbum culture and Christianity. I argue that new Christian discourses and practices, particularly from Baptist and Pentecostal influences, threaten to drastically alter Wimbum cultural identity. This essay revisits the debates and legal contests that grew in Cameroon at the turn of the millennium but failed to bring justice for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Several members of sexual minorities were tried in Cameroon courts and sentenced to serve jail time. In this essay I argue that the notion of ubuntu offers a way of rethinking the negative discourses on homosexuality in Africa and in the African church. Ubuntu promotes accepting communication within the ecclesial community in Africa.
