A recommendation of: Aline Galland, Ignacio Clemente-Conte, Jean-Renaud Boisserie, Anne Delagnes How depositional environments impact the microwear preservation of quartz artifacts: insights from the Oldowan of the Shungura Formation (Ethiopia) https://doi.org/10.31233/osf.io/9k8p3_v3

  • How depositional environments impact the microwear preservation of quartz artifacts

    Aline Galland, Ignacio Clemente-Conte et al.•PREPRINT•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 45

The function of Oldowan tools is a key aspect of early hominin subsistence in eastern Africa. The rarity of the sites, the preservation of the assemblages and raw materials are limiting factors in the functional study of Early Pleistocene assemblages. The archaeological occurrences from Member F of the Shungura Formation (Ethiopia) have a precise chronostratigraphic framework (2.324 ± 0.020 Ma to 2.271 ± 0.041 Ma), a detailed reconstruction of de…

  • Uniform, circular, and shallow enamel pitting in hominins

    Open Access•I Towle, Mackie C O''Hara et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025•Referências: 113

This study explores a particular form of enamel pitting originally identified in Paranthropus robustus. We call this uniform, circular, and shallow (UCS) pitting to distinguish it from more irregular and nonuniform defects often associated with enamel hypoplasia. We pose the hypothesis that UCS pitting is unique to the genus Paranthropus. We test this by investigating hominin dental remains from the ca. 3.4 Ma to ca. 1.1 Ma fossiliferous sequence…

  • Taxonomic assignments for the 3.4 Ma to 1.1 Ma hominin postcanine teeth from the Usno Formation and the Shungura Formation, Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia

Leslea J Hlusko, Franck Guy et al.•PREPRINT•2024•Citada por: 1

Sediments of the Usno Formation and the Shungura Formation date from ca. 3.75 Ma to 1.09 Ma, during which time the genus Homo appeared, Australopithecus disappeared, and the eastern African robust hominins did both. We performed an in-depth analysis of size, shape, and morphology of 108 Omo permanent postcanine dental specimens. First, we compared linear dimensions against a comparative dataset of 809 teeth from 359 specimens representing 10 homi…

Jean-Renaud Boisserie•ARTICLE•Annales d Ethiopie•2010

Tectonic, environmental and human evolution in the Afar triangle ; This review describes the evolution of the Afar Region, documented through abundant geological and palaeontological literature. The region constitutes the heart of the Arabo-African rift system. Its history has been characterized by intense tectonic and volcanic activities. These favoured the fossilization of abundant biological and cultural evidence from the Miocene (ca. 11 Ma) u…

A diverse assemblage of large mammals is spatially and stratigraphically associated with Ardipithecus ramidus at Aramis. The most common species are tragelaphine antelope and colobine monkeys. Analyses of their postcranial remains situate them in a closed habitat. Assessment of dental mesowear, microwear, and stable isotopes from these and a wider range of abundant associated larger mammals indicates that the local habitat at Aramis was predomina…
