From Cousin Joe to the Comoros: Orthography and the Politics of Choice in Africa and African America
This paper explores issues of orthographic representation in two different projects, in two different locations, and draws some general conclusions about the role of an outsider linguistic anthropologist in working with individuals and their data. One project involved helping Cousin Joe, a blues singer from New Orleans, to edit his autobiography for publication. The other project involved developing a bilingual, bidirectional, Shinzwani-English d…

This paper surveys the history of dictionary construction and orthographic choice in the Comoros — a former French colony in the Indian Ocean — with special reference to issues of literacy, identity, and politics. Evidence ranging from 16th century wordlists to contemporary bilingual/bidirectional dictionaries, as well as colonial, missionary, and scholarly approaches to lexicography and orthography in the Comoros, are examined and compared. Prewar blues in St. Louis 1
The Blues Tradition in St. Louis
This paper is an attempt to explore the early blues scene in St. Louis and the role that the city had in the development of this unique AfroAmerican style of music. In its formative years the blues was not only rarely noticed or written about but in many cases it was carefully avoided …

Matrilocal Residence and Nonsororal Polygyny: A Case from the Comoro Islands
In the Comoro Islands the preferred form of marriage is matrilocal nonsororal polygyny. This form is little understood and according to some, impossible. Catharsis, Communication, and Evocation: Alternative Views of the Sociopsychological Functions of Blues Singing
T he potential value of song texts as mechanisms for psychological release of emotion has been observed and commented on by both anthropologists and ethnomusicologists. The concept appears to be basis for most recent scholarly approaches to understanding of blues singing. Herskovits, for example, suggested in 1934 that in Negro cultures therapeutic value of bringing a repressed into open was commonly achieved in song (1966:137). Merriam, too, poi…
