  • Collaborative Agency in Civic and Community Engagement

    Open Access•Elizabeth Thomas, Marsha D Walton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2020•Referências: 5

The development of democratic citizenship and youth leadership requires an ability to collaborate with others in ways that are jointly empowering. In this study, we sought to understand how students at an urban liberal arts college in the United States framed their own and others’ efficacy and responsibility in narrative accounts of situations they faced in civic and community engagement. We were interested in how young people learn and work alon…

  • Narrative skills predict peer adjustment across elementary school years

    Open Access•Alice J Davidson, Marsha D Walton et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2016•Citada por: 3•Referências: 23

The importance of peer adjustment in middle childhood coincides with developing social cognitive and discursive skills that include the ability to make personal narrative accounts. Authoring personal stories promotes attention to the sequence of events, the causal connections between events, the moral significance of what has happened, and the motives that drive human action: these skills may be critical for the establishment and maintenance of s…

  • Patterns of Conflict Experience That Emerge in Peer Reports and Personal Narratives During Middle Childhood

Alice J Davidson, Marsha D Walton et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2013

The present study used a person-centered approach to examine patterns of conflict experience among 198 3rd–6th grade children. Peer reports of aggressive behavior, sociability, victimization, and an assessment of psychological mindedness in narrative accounts of conflict experiences were used. Three patterns were identified using mixture modeling: Managers, Avoiders, and Sustainers. Patterns differed with respect to narrative skills and social ad…

  • Reported speech and the development of authorial voice in middle childhood

    Marsha D Walton, Jenny Walton-Wetzel•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2013•Referências: 10

The presentation of speech-in-text is an inherently meta-linguistic practice. When children bring speech into their writing, they are necessarily attending to speech as such. Constructing reported speech requires them to use language reflexively and may be a critical component of the development of an authorial voice. We examined 3495 occasions of reported speech or talk about speech in 689 personal narratives by 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in two …

  • Romance and friendship in pre-teen stories about conflicts

    Open Access•Marsha D Walton, Ann Weatherall et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2002•Citada por: 11•Referências: 8

Although scholars have given considerable attention to adolescent romance, few have examined the discursive practices of pre-adolescents, as they are just beginning to take up (and to resist) cultural coherence systems that construct gender and sexuality. From a corpus of 689 personal narratives written by US inner-city pre-teens about interpersonal conflict, we selected the 33 stories that included themes of romance (`liking', `goin' with', `hav…

  • The Role of Personal Narrative in Bringing Children into the Moral Discourse of Their Culture

    Marsha D Walton, Christie Brewer•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2001•Citada por: 4•Referências: 2

This study examined personal narratives written by 364 inner-city 4th–6th graders about an experience with interpersonal conflict. Stories were coded for three sets of variables based on Bruner’s 1990 work on narrative thought. The co-occurrences of these variables lent support to the notions that (a) establishing a moral voice involves noting what is culturally non-canonical and providing culturally recognizable explanations, (b) taking an epist…

  • Say It's a Lie or I'll Punch You

    Marsha D Walton•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2000•Referências: 36

Verbs of knowing and other epistemological expressions were examined in transcripts of spontaneous conflict episodes in K-4th-grade classrooms. In 4,673 utterances there were 833 instances of epistemological expressions, with the proportion increasing with age and highest in teacher utterances. About one third of the children's epistemological expressions concerned certainty, contrasting knowledge with belief. These utterances were used strategic…

  • Ostensible lies and the negotiation of shared meanings

    Marsha D Walton•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1998•Citada por: 2•Referências: 6

Ostensible speech acts are utterances that take the form of an invitation, compliment, request, and so forth but that actually function “off the record” for some other purpose. Ostensible lies are an interesting subset of ostensible speech because they involve the ability of one speaker to (apparently) impose a particular view of reality, that is, to make that view stand in the ongoing interaction. I argue that a primary “off‐record” purpose of t…
