  • Idleness in South Africa Re-visited

    Norman Buchignani•ARTICLE•Journeys•2000

This paper has two broad objectives. In section I, I identify several ways that widely accepted criteria in anthropology for adequate ethnographic data collection, analysis and representation can be usefully applied to the study of text-based discourses on Europe’s Others. In particular, I suggest that the more consistent application of fieldwork- derived methodological standards and practice to travel literature could help analysts approach leve…

  • Informal care and older Native Canadians

    Open Access•Norman Buchignani, CHRISTOPHER ARMSTRONG-ESTHER•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•1999•Citada por: 3

The number and relative proportion of older Native people in Canada are both increasing rapidly. So also is a social problems discourse asserting that informal care of older Native people by family and kin is traditional, and highly appropriate today. However, neither this discourse nor previous research satisfactorily address the informal care requirements of older Native people nor the gendered implications that high levels of informal care pro…

  • Rural landlessness, extended entitlements and inter-household relations in south Asia

Doreen Marie Indra, Norman Buchignani•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•1997•Citada por: 8•Referências: 23

This article shows how people in one part of Bangladesh rendered landless and impoverished by river bank erosion make innovative use of kinship and other ideologies legitimating reciprocity and mutual aid to re-establish themselves rent-free on the land of others. It thereby addresses a larger empirical issue: where are the fully landless rural poor in South Asia living, and through what means? Theoretically, it extends Drèze and Sen's analysis o…

  • The Weberian Thesis in India cas / La Thèse wébérienne en Inde
