  • Toxic Silence: Towards an Auditory Phenomenology of Polluted Environments

    Christian Schnurr•ARTICLE•Comparative and Continental…•2025

This article proposes an auditory-phenomenological approach to the perception of toxic environments. A phenomenon called “toxic silence” is introduced, that is, silence in environments that are polluted to an extent that is hostile to life. Key texts from ecological literature that refer to silence in polluted environments are presented, namely Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, and Svetlana Alexievich’s Voices of Chernobyl. The main characteristics …

  • The concept of ‘nature’ in chemistry in a digital and ecological age

    Open Access•Christian Schnurr•ARTICLE•Foundations of Chemistry•2025

The chemical understanding of ‘nature’ is a naturalistic one where ‘nature’—understood as the chemical dynamics that guide material change—coincides with chemical reality and possibility. A naturalistic chemist considers all chemical substances equally ‘natural’, and more importantly also all possible substances. I characterize the first point as the ‘monistic’ and the second as the ‘potentialistic’ understanding of ‘nature’ in chemistry. I argue…

    Open Access•Christian Schnurr•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2022
