Evaluation of the disease burden of nosocomial infection among inpatients in a cancer hospital based on propensity score matching
Background: Oncology patients, as an immunocompromised population, are particularly susceptible to hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). This study aims to establish a scientifically sound model to estimate the disease burden associated with HAIs in oncology patients, providing valuable decision-making support for healthcare systems and public health management. Methods: Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed. Post-matching permutation tests…
The knowledge paradox
Background Older men (≥50 years) in China face elevated HIV infection risks, yet HIV stigma remains a significant barrier to prevention. Although HIV knowledge is frequently assumed to reduce stigma, the evidence is inconsistent. This cross-sectional study examined the association between HIV knowledge and stigma among older men in Southwest China, specifically investigating potential nonlinear patterns within sociocultural contexts. Methods We c…
HIV/Aids knowledge and stigma attitudes among older men in Sichuan Province, Southwest China
This study identifies a low-knowledge-high-stigma pattern among older men in Sichuan, Southwest China, which may be influenced by historical fear-based health messaging and conservative sociocultural norms. Although awareness of HIV/AIDS knowledge was associated with lower stigma attitudes, education level, and sexual attitudes demonstrated more potent effects. These findings underscore the need for integrated interventions that combine knowledge…
Influence of Health Warnings on Beliefs about the Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking, in the Context of an Experimental Study in Four Asian Countries
Cigarette package health warnings can be an important and low-cost means of communicating the health risks of smoking. We examined whether viewing health warnings in an experimental study influenced beliefs about the health effects of smoking, by conducting surveys with ~500 adult male smokers and ~500 male and female youth (age 16-18) in Beijing, China ( n = 1070), Mumbai area, India ( n = 1012), Dhaka, Bangladesh ( n = 1018), and Republic of Ko…
The heterogeneous effects of cigarette prices on brand choice in China
Only a small percentage of low-income and less educated Chinese smokers switched to cheaper brands in response to price increases. Hence, the concern of the Chinese government that a cigarette tax increase will lead to large-scale brand switching is not supported by this study
Changes in tar yields and cigarette design in samples of Chinese cigarettes, 2009 and 2012
The use of ventilation to decrease TNCO emissions is misleading smokers to believe that they are smoking a 'light/low' tar cigarette that is healthier, and is potentially forestalling the quitting behaviours that would begin to reduce the health burden of tobacco in China, and so should be prohibited
Toxic metal and nicotine content of cigarettes sold in China, 2009 and 2012
Tobacco in Chinese cigarettes purchased in seven geographically disbursed cities contains consistently high levels of metals, including carcinogens like Cd. One source may be the improper use of fertilisers. These numbers should be monitored more carefully and regulated by health officials
