Sociodemographic characteristic of changes in smoking patterns in rural and urban population of Pure Poland study
Despite a small but significant decline in overall smoking rates, important differences in smoking and quitting patterns emerged between rural and urban areas, as well as sexes. A less favorable smoking patterns were observed among women, and rural populations, suggesting that these are important targets of future tobacco control interventions in Poland
Alcohol
Alcohol
From the cover. Alcohol has always been an issue in public health but it is currently assuming increasing importance as a cause of disease and premature death worldwide. Alcohol: Science, Policy, and Public Health provides an interdisciplinary source of information that links together the usually separate fields of science, policy, and public health. This comprehensive volume highlights the importance of bringing scientific knowledge to bear in o…
Tobacco use in 3 billion individuals from 16 countries
Plenary IV The changing trends of diseases in east and central Europe
Wide health inequalities remain between eastern and western Europe. In 2008 there was a 20 year difference in life expectancy between Dutch men (80.7 years) and Russian men (60.5 years). Premature mortality (before 65 years of age) in some countries of western Europe has fallen to a single digit, but among Russian males it has fluctuated widely in recent decades, and is still about 50%. From the early 1960s the health trends in eastern Europe sta…
The relationship between smokers' motivation to quit and intensity of tobacco control at the population level
There are differences in the stages of change between the countries under examination. However, the categorisation of the countries into low, medium and high tobacco control activity used in this analysis does not explain these differences. Most smokers want to stop smoking, but a high proportion cannot indicate a time-frame when this is going to happen. Tobacco control efforts or other kinds of support might encourage these smokers to actually t…
Smoking characteristics of Polish immigrants in Dublin
Polish immigrants' smoking estimates are higher than their Irish counterparts, and particularly if employed, with only primary-level education, and are overseas >2 years
Social inequalities in male mortality, and in male mortality from smoking
An uncontrolled trial of cytisine (Tabex) for smoking cessation
The long-term abstinence rates were similar to those observed in smokers receiving nicotine replacement therapy. Full-scale randomised trials of cytisine (Tabex), conducted to the standards required by regulatory authorities, are warranted
The contribution of leading diseases and risk factors to excess losses of healthy life in eastern Europe
The main requirements for reducing excess health losses in the east of Europe are: 1) favorable shifts in all amenable vascular risk factors (irrespective of their current levels) by population-wide and personal measures; 2) intensified tobacco control; 3) reduced alcohol consumption and injury control strategies (for example, for road traffic injuries). Cost effective strategies are broadly known but local institutional support for them needs st…
WHO Europe evidence based recommendations on the treatment of tobacco dependence
The following recommendations on the treatment of tobacco dependence have been written as an initiative of the World Health Organization European Partnership Project to Reduce Tobacco Dependence
Alcohol and health
The countries of central and eastern Europe are character ised by some of the world's highest premature death rates in middle aged men.12 A considerable part of the epidemic of man made diseases observed in recent decades in this region is accounted for by diseases caused by alcohol.35 In general, an increase in alcohol consumption was observed in central and eastern European countries after the second world war, and negative health effects (incl…
Nicotine dependence versus smoking prevalence
Successful tobacco control may result in a higher dependence among the remaining smokers (due to selective quitting by low-dependent smokers). The remaining highly dependent smokers may need more intensive treatment
