Community client-led anti-retroviral therapy delivery for people newly diagnosed with HIV
Engaging in HIV care services can be challenging for refugees as they navigate new care systems while meeting daily needs. This pilot study assessed Early Community Client-led ART Delivery (Early CCLAD) as a differentiated care strategy for those newly diagnosed with HIV in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda. Early CCLAD was a community antiretroviral therapy delivery option where group members take turns coming to the health center.Adults acces…
Correlates of HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis uptake among female university students in Uganda
Female university students engaging in high-risk sexual behaviours, such as transactional sex or unprotected sex, are eligible for HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP/PEP). This study aimed to determine the uptake and correlates of PEP and PrEP use among female students at a public university in Uganda. We conducted an online survey among 483 female students at Makerere University and found that 53% had ever engaged in sexual intercourse…
Experiences of undetectable = untransmittable among couples with different HIV serostatus
HIV serodifferent couples where one partner is living with HIV and the other is not, remain a key population for HIV prevention. Maintaining an undetectable viral load eliminates the risk of sexual HIV transmission, this principle is often summarised as undetectable = untransmittable (U = U). However, the extent to which this principle is understood and utilised by serodifferent couples remains unclear. This study aimed to explore both partners’ …
Oral PrEP Use by Transgender Men in Uganda
Impact of Covid-19 Public Health Measures on Antiretroviral Therapy Use Among Ugandans Living with HIV in Sero-Different Couples
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) use and HIV suppression among people living with HIV (PLHIV) are critical for HIV control and prevention. Extreme restrictions on movement early during the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda may have impeded the ability to initiate and sustain access to and use of ART. From our stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial of an integrated PrEP and ART intervention for HIV-serodifferent couples at 12 ART clinics in Uganda, we ident…
How PrEP delivery was integrated into public ART clinics in central Uganda
Tailored delivery strategies are important for optimizing the benefit and overall reach of PrEP in sub-Saharan Africa. An integrated approach of delivering time-limited PrEP in combination with ART to serodifferent couples encourages PrEP use in the HIV-negative partner as a bridge to sustained ART use. Although PrEP has been delivered in ART clinics for many years, the processes involved in integrating PrEP into ART services are not well underst…
Implementation of gender-based violence screening guidelines in public HIV treatment programs
Background HIV and gender-based violence (GBV) intersect to threaten population health. The Uganda Ministry of Health recommends routine GBV screening alongside HIV care but evidence detailing its implementation in HIV care settings is limited. We evaluated screening practices in public HIV clinics to generate evidence supporting GBV screening optimization. Methods To evaluate GBV screening implementation in antiretroviral therapy (ART) clinics, …

Behavioral Modeling and its Association with PrEP and ART Use in Ugandan HIV-Serodifferent Couples
Integrating Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) delivery into Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) programs bridges the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention gap for HIV-serodifferent couples prior to the partner living with HIV achieving viral suppression. Behavioral modeling is one mechanism that could explain health-related behavior among couples, including those using antiretroviral medications, but few tools exist to measure the extent to which …
Depression and PrEP uptake, interruption, and adherence among young women in Uganda
Depression is a common cause of morbidity globally and can impact adherence to medications, posing challenges to medication-based HIV prevention. The objectives of this work are to describe the frequency of depression symptoms in a cohort of 499 young women in Kampala, Uganda and to determine the association of depression symptoms with use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Mild or greater depression, assessed by the patient health questionn…
Understanding the barriers and facilitators of Covid-19 risk mitigation strategy adoption and Covid-19 vaccination in refugee settlements in Uganda

How Central Ugandan HIV Clinics Adapted During Covid-19 Lockdown Restrictions to Promote Continuous Access to Care
Health Care Worker Perspectives of HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Service Delivery in Central Uganda
Background: Scale-up of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services in Uganda is ongoing. However, health care workers (HCWs) may not be aware of PrEP nor what offering this service entails. We explored the impact of standardized HCW training on the knowledge and perspectives of PrEP service delivery in Uganda. Methods: We recruited HCWs from facilities that offered HIV-related services in Central Uganda. Using the Uganda Ministry of Health curr…
A novel “HIV salience and Perception” scale is associated with PrEP dispensing and adherence among adolescent girls and young women in Kampala, Uganda
Understanding PrEP Acceptability Among Priority Populations
Daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can safely and effectively prevent HIV acquisition in HIV-negative individuals. However, uptake of PrEP has been suboptimal in sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of this qualitative study was to identify facilitators of and barriers to PrEP acceptability among target users not taking PrEP. Fifty-nine individuals belonging to Ugandan priority populations participated in a single in-depth interview. Participants…
Prevalence and risk factors for hypertension and diabetes among those screened in a refugee settlement in Uganda
Hypertension was common and diabetes was uncommon among those screened in a Ugandan refugee settlement. Routine blood pressure screening should be considered in this setting. Additional research could develop diabetes screening criteria to help identify at risk individuals in this limited resource setting
Health Worker Perspectives on Barriers and Facilitators of Assisted Partner Notification for HIV for Refugees and Ugandan Nationals
Assisted partner notification (APN) is recommended by the World Health Organization to notify sexual partners of HIV exposure. Since 2018, APN has been offered in Uganda to Ugandan nationals and refugees. Distinct challenges faced by individuals in refugee settlements may influence APN utilization and effectiveness. To explore APN barriers and facilitators, we extracted index client and sexual partner data from APN registers at 11 health centers …
Understanding the role of interpersonal violence in assisted partner notification for HIV
BACKGROUND: Assisted partner notification (APN) for HIV was introduced in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda in 2018 to facilitate testing of sexual partners. While APN is an effective strategy recommended by the World Health Organization, its safety has not been evaluated in a refugee settlement context in which participants have high prior exposure to interpersonal violence. The extent to which interpersonal violence influences APN utiliza…
Sexual Behavior and Perceived HIV Risk Among HIV-Negative Members of Serodiscordant Couples in East Africa
Perceived risk versus objectively measured risk of HIV acquisition
Incongruence between perceived and objectively measured risk of HIV acquisition does occur especially among individuals whose partners had a detectable viral load. PrEP counselling for serodiscordant couples should focus on explaining the consequence of detectable viral load in the HIV-positive partner on HIV transmission risk
Short Message Service (SMS) Surveys Assessing Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Adherence and Sexual Behavior are Highly Acceptable Among HIV-Uninfected Members of Serodiscordant Couples in East Africa
Does Adherence Change When No One is Looking? Comparing Announced and Unannounced Tenofovir Levels in a PrEP Trial
