Pottery technological analysis of the Copper Age Transdanubia (Western Hungary)
This article focuses on the technological analysis of the Early and Middle Copper Age (4500–3650 cal BCE) pottery vessels from Transdanubia (Western Hungary), which can reveal the previously unknown social connections based on strong personal interactions in this region. The pottery material of four settlements was studied: Zalavár-Basasziget, Magyar-egres-Varga-Bonyi-ároktól keletre, Tikos-Nyárfás-dűlő, and Győr-Szabadrétdomb. As a result, sever…

The beginning of copper metalworking in the Copper Age of the Carpathian Basin – New data on the provenance of Early and Middle Copper Age copper finds from Western and Central Hungary
The myth of Mecsek malachite used in the Late Neolithic Carpathian Basin- the provenance of Late Neolithic malachite and copper artefacts from South-eastern Transdanubia
The times of their death – question of contemporaneity in burials from a Late Neolithic settlement in Polgár – Csőszhalom (NE Hungary)
Creating Histories
A Copper Age settlement and cemetery was fully excavated at Rákóczifalva-Bivaly-tó Site 1/C in 2005-2007, making it possible to compare the use of its material culture in closely related, coeval, but different archaeological contexts. Such a rare set of circumstances allows the authors to highlight methodological issues associated with the distorting effect of archaeological finds made on sites where only settlement or burial data are available, …
Methodological and interpretational problems in the dating of 6–7th centuries AD on the Great Hungarian Plain
A Makó-Mikócsa-halom kora avar kori temető keltezéséről írt tanulmányukban Gulyás et al. 2018 alapvetően tévesen alkalmazzák a radiokarbon dátumok Bayes-féle modellezését. Vitacikkünkben a módszertani tévedések mellett az általuk használt terminológiai hibákat is tárgyaljuk
Culture, Period or Style? Reconsideration of Early and Middle Copper Age Chronology of the Great Hungarian Plain
The main goal of our research project was to date the Early and Middle Copper Age (4500/4450–3800 cal BC) of the Great Hungarian Plain more precisely. In our project, we took samples for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating from both settlement features and burials, and the data were analyzed using Bayesian modeling. We examined the Early and Middle Copper Age finds of the Great Hungarian Plain on several levels (site, microregional, and re…

Preliminary report on the field surveys and excavations in the vicinity of Berettyóújfalu
The staff of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at the Eötvös Loránd University carried out rescue excavationsprior to the construction of the M4 motorway in Hajdú-Bihar County in 2015. Within the frames of this project theopportunity was given to unearth approximately 5 hectares of a multi-period site east of the city of Berettyóújfalu. Before this excavation systematic field surveys had been carried out on the same site in a 24 hectares la…
Reconsideration of the Copper Age chronology of the eastern Carpathian Basin
Understanding the prehistoric narrative of a region requires good dating, and in recent years good dating has moved increasingly from models drawn from types of artefacts to a framework provided by radiocarbon sequences. This in turn is bringing a change in the way events are described: from broad cultural histories to a network of local sequences. In this case study, the authors apply this rethinking to the Copper Age in a key region of Europe, …
Tracing the source of Late Neolithic Spondylus shell ornaments by stable isotope geochemistry and cathodoluminescence microscopy
