A Novel School-based Intermittent Delivery System of Iron Supplements for Highly Marginalized Tarahumara Indigenous Women of Reproductive Age of Northern Mexico
To develop a novel delivery scheme to bridge the Mexican health system with highly isolated indigenous communities by involving naturally occurring social links: households and boarding schools. This was a school-based placebo-controlled trial with a follow-up period of 16 weeks. Children whose mothers fulfilled the inclusion criteria for anemia acted as iron supplement carriers between schools and homes. Adherence was measured based on teachers'…
Breakfast Skipping, Anxiety, Exercise, and Soda Consumption are Associated with Diet Quality in Mexican College Students
ABSTEACT Despite the reported poor dietary habits and risk of weight gain in college students, they remain understudied in Mexico. Mexican college students are in a rapidly changing economic environment; a shift from a traditional, homemade cuisine to a diet more heavily influenced by an industrialized culture seems to be occurring, potentially affecting the quality of their dietary intake. A health and nutrition survey was conducted among 450 Me…

Sexual Risk Behavior and Type of Sexual Partners in Transnational Indigenous Migrant Workers
Intervention to prevent intestinal parasitic reinfections among Tarahumara indigenous schoolchildren in northern Mexico
Infection/reinfection rates were similar at the schools after 20 weeks. Supervised treatment alone every semester could effectively control AL/GL infections in this indigenous setting
Comparison of the Analytic Performance Between the B-HB and HB-201+ HemoCue® Hemoglobinometers for Venous and Capillary Blood Under Field Work Conditions
This study aimed at comparing the performance of the Hb-201+ and B-Hb HemoCues under field work conditions with 62 indigenous schoolchildren. The microcuvettes were filled with capillary and venous blood. Mean Hb using the Hb-201+ and B-Hb was 13.0 and 13.2 g/dL for venous blood, and 13.7 and 13.5 g/dL for capillary blood, respectively. The intraclass correlation coefficient was high (0.95, p<0.01) between the instruments for venous blood, but it…
Iron Nutrition in Schoolchildren of Western Mexico
In Mexico, food fortification is used as a strategy to combat micronutrient deficiencies. However, little is known about the effects of food fortification in vulnerable populations. This study was carried out in a population of school children believed to be at risk of various micronutrient deficiencies, including iron. The study aimed at determining iron status of children, and identifying and quantifying the sources of iron intake and the prese…
Perception of Food and Body Shape as Dimensions of Western Acculturation Potentially Linked to Overweight in Tarahumara Women of Mexico
A recent survey in northern Mexico found that 52.8% of adult Tarahumara women were overweight. A process of “de-Indianization” of their diet was hypothesized. The present study aimed at exploring food and body shape perceptions as dimensions contributing to the role that Western accultu-ration could be playing in increasing overweight in this isolated indigenous population. Data were obtained from structured interviews of a type commonly used in …
Anthropometry in Tarahumara Indian women of reproductive age in northern Mexico
Recent studies point to an increasing prevalence of obesity and its consequences among American Indians. This study was conducted to assess whether overweight may constitute a problem among adolescent and adult women in one of the most isolated ethnic groups in North America. A population‐based sample of 459 Tarahumara women was taken from Guachochi Municipality in northern Mexico. A BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 was found in 16.9% of women aged 25–49 years old…
