  • Evaluation of a toolbox for the prevention of skin cancer among outdoor workers

Open Access•Frits Boer, Florentine L de Boer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Due to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure at work, outdoor workers face a higher risk of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) than indoor workers. This study evaluates the short-term effectiveness of a sun-safety risk communication toolbox aimed to increase sun-safety behavior among male outdoor workers. Methods: This parallel-controlled, non-randomized study included outdoor construction and arboricultural workers, recruited from five com…

  • A risk communication intervention aimed at enhancing help-seeking behavior and reducing stress symptoms in healthcare workers

    Open Access•Lima M Emal, Sietske J Tamminga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

The risk communication intervention contributes to the intention to change behavior, HCWs who recognized a discrepancy between their values and behavior and did not accept it were prepared to take action. Intention to change behavior is the first step towards actual behavior change, making the intervention promising. While the intervention is promising and warrants further testing to prevent work-related stress in HCWs, intervention and implement…

  • A Health-Impact Assessment of an Ergonomic Measure to Reduce the Risk of Work-Related Lower Back Pain, Lumbosacral Radicular Syndrome and Knee Osteoarthritis among Floor Layers in The Netherlands

Open Access•Paul Kuijer, Henk F van der Molen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Sand-cement-bound screed floor layers are at risk of work-related lower back pain, lumbosacral radicular syndrome and knee osteoarthritis, given their working technique of levelling screed with their trunk bent while mainly supported by their hands and knees. To reduce the physical demands of bending of the trunk and kneeling, a manually movable screed-levelling machine was developed for floor layers in the Netherlands. The aim of this paper is t…

  • Stimulating Sunscreen Use Among Outdoor Construction Workers

Open Access•Anne J Keurentjes, Sanja Kežić et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background Outdoor workers (OW) receive a higher dose of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) compared to indoor workers (IW) which increases the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Regular sunscreen use reduces the NMSC risk, however, adequate sun-safety behavior among OW is poor. The main objective was to conduct method- and intervention-related elements of a future intervention trial among OW, based on providing sunscreen and assessing sunscreen u…

  • Changes in Fruit and Vegetable Consumption and Leisure Time Physical Exercise after a Citizen Science-Based Worksite Health Promotion Program for Blue-Collar Workers

Open Access•Sophie van der Feltz, Henk F van der Molen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Blue-collar workers have, on average, poorer health than white-collar workers. Existing worksite health promotion programs (WHPPs) are often not successful among blue-collar workers. This study evaluates the effect of the Citizen Science-based WHPP on the targeted lifestyle behaviors among construction workers. The data of 114 participants were retrieved from questionnaires before (T0) and after (T1) the WHPP. Outcome measures were mean and categ…

  • The process evaluation of a citizen science approach to design and implement workplace health promotion programs

Open Access•Lisa Lelie, Henk F van der Molen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Workers were satisfied with the involvement in WHPPs. Organizational and social cultural factors were barriers for the CS approach and its reach. Involvement and interaction in WHPPs were particularly experienced in small grouped sessions. Consequently, contextual and personal factors need be considered in the design and implementation of WHPPs with CS approach among blue-collar workers

  • Supporting Occupational Physicians in the Implementation of Workers’ Health Surveillance

Open Access•Felicia S Los, Henk F van der Molen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Workers' health surveillance (WHS) is an important preventive activity aimed at prevention of work-related diseases. However, WHS is not regularly implemented in some EU-countries. As occupational physicians (OPs) have to play an important role in implementation of WHS, this study aimed to develop an intervention to support OPs in implementation of WHS. The behavior change wheel framework (BCW) was used to develop the intervention. First, the pro…

  • Work Disabling Nerve Injury at Both Elbows Due to Laptop Use at Flexible Workplaces inside an Office

Open Access•Paul Kuijer, Joris van der Pas et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Despite the low incidence laptop use might be a risk factor for the occurrence of ulnar neuropathy due to prolonged pressure on the elbow. Employers and workers need to be educated about this disabling occupational injury due to laptop use and about protective work practices such as support for the upper arm and elbow. This seems especially relevant given the trend of more flexible workspaces inside and outside offices, and given the seemingly sa…

  • Adapting Citizen Science to Improve Health in an Occupational Setting

Open Access•Mandy van den Berge, Gerben Hulsegge et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Health interventions often do not reach blue-collar workers. Citizen science engages target groups in the design and execution of health interventions, but has not yet been applied in an occupational setting. This preliminary study determines barriers and facilitators and feasible elements for citizen science to improve the health of blue-collar workers. The study was conducted in a terminal and construction company by performing semi-structured …

  • Occupational Diseases among Workers in Lower and Higher Socioeconomic Positions

Open Access•Henk F van der Molen, Sanne I De Vrie et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Background: To determine differences between workers in lower and higher socioeconomic positions (SEP) in incidences of occupational disease (OD) and incapacity for work due to ODs. Methods: From a Dutch dynamic prospective cohort of occupational physicians (OPs), ODs assessed by OPs were retrieved for lower and higher SEP groups. Results: Among the lower SEP, musculoskeletal disorders, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) comprised two-thirds o…
