  • Hunter-gatherers wolf interactions increased in the Franco-Cantabrian glacial refugee during the LGM before dog domestication

    Open Access•Asier San-Juan-Nó, José A Peña et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Hunter-gatherers in the Late Palaeolithic developed several cultural and technical innovations, among which dog domestication outstands. The complex process of wolf-dog domestication seems to have been developed in several sub-regions of Eurasia. Among these regions, the Franco-Cantabrian Fringe (FCF) in Western Europe outstands for having some of the oldest morphometrically and genetically identified dog remains. On this basis, the M…

  • Pilot study on level 3 fingerprint features for their use in forensic identification

    Open Access•María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona, Victor Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Dermatoglyphs are formed early during prenatal development and, due to their individuality and permanence, are commonly used for identification. When fingertips touch a surface, sweat distributed along the ridges is transferred, producing a latent fingerprint. To use this latent fingerprint for identification purposes, each country establishes a well-defined minimum number of level 2 features (or minutiae). Latent fingerprints obtaine…

  • Ideal body image for the opposite sex and its association with body mass index

This research studied the preferences reported by women and men about their Ideal Body Image for the Opposite Sex (IBIOS), and its association with body mass index (BMI). It also analysed the preferences of each sex for a woman’s ideal body image (W-IBI) and a man’s ideal body image (M-IBI). A total of 450 participants aged 18–70 years with different weights were studied. Their IBIOS was assessed using standard figural stimuli. The sample was div…

  • Association between lifestyle features and obesity phenotypes in adults from the Basque Country (Spain)

María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona, Aline Jelenkovic et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2023

Lifestyle is related to the risk of obesity, but the relationship between different lifestyle features and obesity phenotypes remains unclear. This study analysed the association between different lifestyle features (eating habits, activity, sleep patterns, and tobacco and alcohol consumption), and four obesity phenotypes (overall and abdominal obesity, distribution and percentage of fat). The sample included 521 adults aged between 18 and 70 yea…

  • Association between birth weight and educational attainment

Aline Jelenkovic, Janne Mikkonen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2018•Citada por: 1•Referências: 43

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that birth weight is positively associated with education, but it remains unclear whether this association is explained by familial environmental factors, genetic factors or the intrauterine environment. We analysed the association between birth weight and educational years within twin pairs, which controls for genetic factors and the environment shared between co-twins. METHODS: The data were derived from nine twin …

  • Association of maternal menarcheal age with anthropometric dimensions and blood pressure in children from Greater Bilbao

Open Access•Aline Jelenkovic, Esther Rebato•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2015

Children with earlier MMA tend to have greater anthropometric dimensions. Adolescent growth spurt might affect these relationships, at least in girls

  • Common variants in BDNF, Faim2, FTO, MC4R, Negr1, and SH2B1 show association with obesity‐related variables in S panish R oma population

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2014

The results of this study suggest that SNPs in or near six genes (BDNF, FAIM2, FTO, MC4R, NEGR1, and SH2B1) are significantly associated with body fat accumulation and distribution in Roma people. However, the association observed among variants in the first intron of FTO and obesity in European derived populations is not evident in the analyzed Roma sample

  • Obesity and body size perceptions in a Spanish Roma population

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2014

This Roma population presents one of the highest rates of obesity worldwide. Although a certain awareness of the correct weight status was appreciated, the inability of Roma individuals to see themselves as overweight or obese may be a significant factor on the high prevalence of obesity in this population

  • Heritability variations of body linearity and obesity indicators during growth

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, Aline Jelenkovic et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2012

  • Heritability and genetic correlations of obesity-related phenotypes among Roma people

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, Ma Eugenia Ibáñez et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2012

The study concluded that the Greater Bilbao Roma population is genetically predisposed to abdominal fat distribution. Variation in body mass is highly associated with variation in adiposity. However, overall fatness and adiposity distribution does not seem to share major common genetic factors, although common environmental factors operate between them

  • Association among Obesity-Related Anthropometric Phenotypes

    Aline Jelenkovic, Esther Rebato•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2012•Citada por: 2•Referências: 25

Obesity has become a public-health and policy problem in many parts of the world. Epidemiological and population studies in this field are usually based on different anthropometric measures; however, common genetic and environmental factors between these phenotypes have been scarcely studied. The objective of this article is to assess the strength of these factors on the covariation among a large set of obesity-related traits. The subject group c…

In this study we estimate relative genetic and environmental influences on head-related anthropometric phenotypes. The subject group consisted of 119 nuclear families living in Brussels, Belgium, and included 238 males and 236 females, ages 17 to 72 years. Two factor analyses with varimax rotation (the first one related to facial measurements and the second one to overall head morphology) were used to analyze 14 craniofacial size traits. The resu…

  • Heritability of the somatotype components in Biscay families

Open Access•Esther Rebato, Aline Jelenkovic et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2007

  • Heritability variations of morphometric traits in West Bengal (India) children aged 4–19 years

Open Access•Itziar Salces, Esther Rebato et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2007

These results confirmed the existence of age-related trends in heritability of the considered morphometric traits. The sharp decline of the heritabilities at adolescence in most of the morphometric traits, and the acromio-iliac index in particular, may be due to the large inter-individual variation in the age at which the adolescent growth spurt is reached in both sexes
