Negotiating responsibility
Background Research on everyday racism in healthcare remains limited, particularly in Germany. This study examines how healthcare professionals perceive their own conduct toward racialized healthcare users and explores the interpretive frameworks that shape these perceptions. By focusing on the everyday concepts that guide clinical encounters, the analysis highlights how racism is reproduced within healthcare interactions and offers insight into …
The police came in white protective suits and with batons, it was pure disaster” – a multi-stakeholder perspective on infection control in reception centers for asylum seekers during the Covid-19 pand…
The study highlights that shelters are problematic institutions from a public health perspective. It shows the importance of implementing customized pandemic interventions in refugee shelters that take account of the diverse needs and experiences of both refugee and staff. Pictorial Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life. Development and Pre-Test of the PictoQOL Questionnaire
The aim of the present study was to develop a pictorial questionnaire for the assessment of health-related quality of life (PictoQOL) and to examine its content validity and usability across three exemplary population groups of different origin residing in Germany (non-migrants, Turkish migrants and Arabic-speaking migrants). A mixed-methods design combining qualitative and quantitative methods was used, comprising 6 focus group discussions with …
Perceived controllability of a Sars-CoV-2 infection
The results show that intersectional differences in perceived controllability occur especially between migrant and non-migrant women. Possible causes may lie in language barriers, which in connection with lower health literacy may affect perceived controllability. Dedicated efforts to improve controllability among older adults, those with lower educational attainment and migrant women are warranted
What are the reasons for refusing a Covid-19 vaccine? A qualitative analysis of social media in Germany
The study emphasizes the relevance of providing trustworthy and quality-assured information on COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination to all population groups. In addition, vaccinations should be easily accessible in order to promote the population's willingness to be vaccinated
Promoting rational antibiotic use in Turkey and among Turkish migrants in Europe – implications of a qualitative study in four countries
BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is considered one of the major threats to global health. The emergence of resistant microorganisms is a consequence of irrational use of antibiotics. In Turkey, the consumption of antibiotics is relatively high and antibiotics are among the most commonly used drugs. However, Turkey has adopted new, more restrictive policies and regulations on antibiotics. In addition, Turkish migrants to EU countries, such as …
Is exposure to secondhand smoke associated with current depression (PHQ-8) among never-smokers? Results from a survey among German adults
Higher levels of SHS exposure are associated with current depression, although the nature and direction of the association are still unclear. We identified no differences in the association between men and women. More studies, particularly using longitudinal data, are needed to determine the nature of the association
Utilization of cervical cancer screening among migrants and non-migrants in Germany
The disparities identified are in line with findings from studies conducted in other countries and are indicative of different obstacles this population group encounters in the health system. Implementing patient-oriented health care through diversity-sensitive health services is necessary to support informed decision-making
Lay perspectives on social distancing and other official recommendations and regulations in the time of Covid-19
In uncertain crises, transparency in the presentation of information and government policies emerge as influential determinants in creating social susceptibility and solidarity. The differences between social classes constitute one of the important factors that affect the decision-making mechanisms of individuals in determining the necessary steps to be undertaken in times of crisis
Health-Related Disparities among Migrant Children at School Entry in Germany. How does the Definition of Migration Status Matter
Background : Migration background is known to be an important risk factor for a number of medical outcomes. Still, relatively little is known about the epidemiologic relevance of different definitions of migration status. Methods : Data from 5250 school entry examinations spanning three consecutive years (2015-2017) were gathered from the Public Health Department in Halle, Germany. Data were stratified according to six different migration statuse…
Indirect consequences of extreme weather and climate events and their associations with physical health in coastal Bangladesh
BACKGROUND: Bangladesh is one of the countries in the world which is most prone to natural disasters. The overall situation is expected to worsen, since extreme weather and climate events (EWCE) are likely to increase in both frequency and intensity. Indirect consequences caused in the events' aftermath widen the range of possible adverse health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of indirect consequences of EWCE and physical health. D…
The factor structure of the Turkish version of the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) in patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease
In accordance with studies on other language adaptations of the questionnaire, we identified certain items of the IPQ-R as potential sources of poor model fit. Their inclusion should be reconsidered in future applications of the questionnaire and researchers should examine whether our reduced set of items is stable across different populations. Our modified 34-item model showed a good reliability and discriminant validity and hence could be a val…
Factors associated with self-rated health status in university students
The results suggest that SRHS can be reasonably used to compare students' health across countries. SRHS is affected by different physical, psychological and psychosomatic aspects of health; however, its strongest association is with psychosomatic complaints
