Assessing spirometry, exhaled nitric oxide, and asthma symptoms score as instruments for respiratory health evaluation among women in a low socioeconomic context
The results of our investigation indicated that those who with DDCA had significantly increased FeNO, and also DDCA was significantly associated with abnormal FEV 1 z score, and obstructive pattern. Thus, using a structured and validated asthma symptoms questionnaire might potentially identify individuals with respiratory health symptoms that may require further respiratory health assessment at health facilities for comprehensive asthma diagnosis
Kitchen Characteristics and Practices Associated with Increased PM2.5 Concentration Levels in Zimbabwean Rural Households
Household air pollution (HAP) from biomass fuels significantly contributes to cardio-respiratory morbidity and premature mortality globally. Particulate matter (PM), one of the pollutants generated, remains the most accurate indicator of household air pollution. Determining indoor air concentration levels and factors influencing these levels at the household level is of prime importance, as it objectively guides efforts to reduce household air po…
Impact of ambient air pollution exposure during pregnancy on adverse birth outcomes
Prenatal exposure to PM 2.5 and SO 2 pollution adversely affected birth outcomes after controlling for other prenatal risk factors. This suggests that local government officials have a responsibility for better control of air pollution and health care providers need to advise pregnant females about the risks of air pollution during pregnancy
Lagged Association between Climate Variables and Hospital Admissions for Pneumonia in South Africa
Pneumonia is a leading cause of hospitalization in South Africa. Climate change could potentially affect its incidence via changes in meteorological conditions. We investigated the delayed effects of temperature and relative humidity on pneumonia hospital admissions at two large public hospitals in Limpopo province, South Africa. Using 4062 pneumonia hospital admission records from 2007 to 2015, a time-varying distributed lag non-linear model was…
Harbor and Intra-City Drivers of Air Pollution
Multiple land use regression models (LUR) were developed for different air pollutants to characterize exposure, in the Durban metropolitan area, South Africa. Based on the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE) methodology, concentrations of particulate matter (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ), sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ), and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) were measured over a 1-year period, at 41 sites, with Ogawa Badges and 21 sites with PM Moni…
Home Assessment of Indoor Microbiome (Haim) in Relation to Lower Respiratory Tract Infections among Under-Five Children in Ibadan, Nigeria
The association between household air pollution and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) among children under five years of age has been well documented; however, the extent to which the microbiome within the indoor environment contributes to this association is uncertain. The home assessment of indoor microbiome (HAIM) study seeks to assess the abundance of indoor microbiota (IM) in the homes of under-five children (U-5Cs) with and without …
The differential effect of maternal dietary patterns on quantiles of Birthweight
Both maternal undernutrition and overnutrition of protein rich foods, junk foods, snack and energy foods and vegetable rich foods have shown a substantial varying effects on those infants with birthweights in the lower and upper birthweight quantiles
Association of childhood pulmonary tuberculosis with exposure to indoor air pollution
Our study suggests increased risk of childhood tuberculosis disease when children are exposed to SHS, dirty cooking fuel, and dampness in their homes. Yet, HIV status, age and TB contact are the most important risk factors of childhood PTB in this population
Land Use Regression Modelling of Outdoor NO2 and PM2.5 Concentrations in Three Low Income Areas in the Western Cape Province, South Africa
Air pollution can cause many adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular and respiratory disorders. Land use regression (LUR) models are frequently used to describe small-scale spatial variation in air pollution levels based on measurements and geographical predictors. They are particularly suitable in resource limited settings and can help to inform communities, industries, and policy makers. Weekly measurements of NO2 and PM 2.5 were perf…
A prospective cohort study on ambient air pollution and respiratory morbidities including childhood asthma in adolescents from the western Cape Province
This research applies state of the art exposure assessment approaches to characterize the effects of ambient air pollutants on childhood respiratory health, with a specific focus on asthma and markers of airway inflammation (FeNO) in South African informal settlement areas by considering also pollen counts and meteorological factors. The study will generate crucial data on air pollution and asthma in low income settings in sub-Sahara Africa that …
The risk of pulmonary tuberculosis in underground copper miners in Zambia exposed to respirable silica
Our results demonstrate the association of increased risk for certified active TB with cumulative respirable dust in a dose related manner among this sample of copper miners. There is need to intensify dust control measures and incorporate anti-smoking interventions into TB prevention and control programmes in the mines
Mining
Mining has played a central role in the development of South Africa - from the importation of European labour through to the migrant labour system that characterised apartheid, our mineral resources have molded our political, social, and economic paradigms over the last 140 years. The current turmoil on the mines emphasises this legacy and its centrality in our history. The mining industry not only shaped the early development of legislation to p…
