A qualitative interview study exploring barriers and facilitators to uptake of measles vaccination among healthcare workers at a London hospital
Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCW) are at increased risk of measles due to their occupational exposure. Yet, there is evidence of low vaccination rates, inadequate immunity among this group, and many do not know their vaccination status. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore barriers and facilitators to measles vaccination and reasons why some HCW do not know their vaccination status. Methods: We conducted 23 online semi-structured …
How EAL teachers harness a bespoke artificial intelligence tool to achieve personalised learning
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to a surge in AI-powered English language tutoring applications, with promising features integrated into teaching and learning. This article reports on a qualitative study of teachers’ leveraging AI to support pedagogical outcomes for adult learners of English as an additional language (EAL). The study involved five teachers from a Melbourne-based EAL provider, focusing on their use of …
Quantifying H5N1 outbreak potential and control effectiveness in high-risk agricultural populations
Avian influenza is a global public health threat. Since 2021, the ongoing H5N1 panzootic has brought a major shift in H5Nx epidemiology, including unprecedented spread, wide host range and lack of seasonality. Infections in marine mammals, wildlife and livestock have heightened concern for human-to-human transmission and pandemic potential. Contact tracing and self-isolation are used as public health measures in the UK to manage contacts of confi…
Using Conversations, Listening and Leadership to Support Staff Wellness
Healthcare workers' (HCWs) wellness is a critical concern, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff Wellness Rounding (SWR) has emerged as a leadership-driven strategy to support HCWs but research on its effectiveness remains limited. This study examines the impact of SWR within a large healthcare organisation in Australia and introduces the CALM (Conversation, Active Listening, Leadership Engagement, Mechanism for Feedback) Framework …
Knowledge of Self-Isolation Rules in the UK for Those Who Have Symptoms of Covid-19
Approximately 63% of UK adults between November 2020 and February 2022 appeared to know the main rules regarding self-isolation if symptomatic with COVID-19. Knowledge was lower in younger than older people, men than women, those living in England compared with Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and those living in more deprived areas
Mpox knowledge, behaviours and barriers to public health measures among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in the UK
There are differential needs, preferences, and experiences of GBMSM that limit the acceptability of some mitigation and prevention measures. Future public health interventions and campaigns should be co-designed in consultation with key groups and communities to ensure greater acceptability and credibility in different contexts and communities
Understanding adherence to self-isolation in the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic in England
Understanding adherence to isolation and associated reasoning during the early stages of the pandemic is essential to pandemic preparedness for future emerging infectious disease outbreaks. Individuals make complex decisions around adherence by calibrating transmission risks, therefore treating adherence as binary should be avoided
Engagement with protective behaviours in the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic
Engagement with protective behaviours increased at the start of the pandemic and has remained high since. The greatest variations in behaviour reflected changes to Government rules. Despite the duration of restrictions, people have continued to adopt personal protective behaviours that were intended to prevent the spread of COVID-19
Exploring the impact of shielding advice on the wellbeing of individuals identified as clinically extremely vulnerable amid the Covid-19 pandemic
This research highlights the difficulties in providing generic messaging that is applicable and appropriate given the diversity of individuals identified as CEV and the importance of sharing tailored and timely advice to inform shielding decisions. Providing messages that reinforce self-determined action and assistance from support services could reduce the negative impact of shielding on mental health and feelings of social isolation
Covid-19 vaccination intention in the UK
To investigate factors associated with intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19 we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 1,500 UK adults, recruited from an existing online research panel. Data were collected between 14th and 17th July 2020. We used linear regression analyses to investigate associations between intention to be vaccinated for COVID-19 "when a vaccine becomes available to you" and sociodemographic factors, previous influenza vacc…
Is My Cough a Cold or Covid? A Qualitative Study of Covid-19 Symptom Recognition and Attitudes Toward Testing in the UK
Objective: Key to reducing the spread of COVID-19 in the UK is increased use of the NHS Test and Trace (NHSTT) system. This study explored one of the main issues that determine whether people engage with NHSTT, how people understand symptoms that may indicate the presence of COVID-19 and that should trigger a request for a test. Methods: In this qualitative study, a series of semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 40 people (21 …
How to improve adherence with quarantine
OBJECTIVES: The December 2019 outbreak of coronavirus has once again thrown the vexed issue of quarantine into the spotlight, with many countries asking their citizens to 'self-isolate' if they have potentially come into contact with the infection. However, adhering to quarantine is difficult. Decisions on how to apply quarantine should be based on the best available evidence to increase the likelihood of people adhering to protocols. We conducte…

Improving the Psychosocial Work Environment at Multi-Ethnic Workplaces
Global labour migration has increased in recent years and immigrant workers are often recruited into low status and low paid jobs such as cleaning. Research in a Danish context shows that immigrants working in the cleaning industry often form social networks based on shared languages and backgrounds, and that conflict between different ethnic groups may occur. This paper evaluates the impact of a multi-component intervention on the psychosocial w…
Visibility and Social Recognition as Psychosocial Work Environment Factors among Cleaners in a Multi-Ethnic Workplace Intervention
This article focuses on the psychosocial work environment of immigrant cleaners at a Danish workplace. Today, many cleaners working in Danish cleaning jobs are women from the established immigrant communities, but also labour migrants from the newer EU member states have found their way to the cleaning industry. Studies have drawn attention to immigrants' low position in the cleaning industry and their increased risk of work injuries. This articl…
