  • Prevalence and predictors of modern contraceptives utilization among sexually active adolescent girls and young women in Sierra Leone

Open Access•Ibrahim Franklyn Kamara, Bobson Derrick Fofanah et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

We assessed the prevalence and predictors of modern contraceptive use among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) (15–24 years) in Sierra Leone. We analyzed secondary data of 2,338 sexually active AGYW from the 2019 Sierra Leone demographic and health survey using STATA version 16, and the results were presented as proportions. Modern contraceptive use among AGYW was relatively high (43.1%). The frequently used contraceptives were injectables (…

  • Use of minimally invasive tissue sampling to determine the contribution of diarrheal diseases to under-five mortality and associated co-morbidities and co-infections in children with fatal diarrheal d…

Open Access•Portia Mutevedzi, Portia Chipo Mutevedzi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing child mortality to Shigella /EIEC (14.0%), ST-ETEC (12.4%), rotavirus (26.4%), and adenovirus (non-40/41: 19.0%; 40/41: 5.0%). These pathogens were frequently identified as co-infections. Diarrheal disease accounted for a substantial share of child deaths across CHAMPS sites. Reducing mortality will require preventing diarrhea and addressing key contributors such as malnutrition and HIV

  • Eclampsia among adolescent mothers in low- and middle-Income countries

Open Access•Laura van der Krogt, Alexandra Ridout et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Everyday, approximately 800 pregnant women die from preventable causes, with 95% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Adolescent mothers are disproportionally affected. Hypertensive disorders, including eclampsia, contribute to around 20% of direct maternal deaths, many of which are preventable with simple, cost-effective interventions. This study aims to quantify the risk of eclampsia among adolescent mothers in low- an…

  • Socio-demographic factors associated with incomplete vaccination or non-vaccination among children aged 12–23 months in Sierra Leone

Open Access•Dove Djossaya, Thompson Igbu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Incomplete vaccination or non-vaccination among children was high in Sierra Leone in 2019. In order to increase childhood vaccine uptake, we recommend the development of initiatives geared towards optimizing facility-based service delivery, intensifying health education focusing more on vaccination, enhancing community engagement, addressing barriers to vaccine access, establishing and ensuring proper functioning of immunization defaulter trackin…

  • Immunisation coverage and factors associated with incomplete immunisation in children under two during the Covid-19 pandemic in Sierra Leone

Open Access•Myrte Wassenaar, Augustin E Fombah et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Though full immunisation coverage at district level improved compared with pre-pandemic district estimates from 2019, around one in three surveyed children had missed at least one basic routine vaccination and over half of eligible children had not received the recommended two doses of a measles-containing vaccine. These findings highlight the need to strengthen health systems to improve vaccination uptake in Sierra Leone, and to further explore …

  • Association of community engagement with vaccination confidence and uptake

Open Access•Mohamed F Jalloh, Paul Sengeh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2022

Background: The 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic disrupted childhood immunization in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. After the epidemic, the Government of Sierra Leone prioritized community engagement to increase vaccination confidence and uptake. To support these efforts, we examined potential drivers of vaccination confidence and uptake in Sierra Leone. Methods: We conducted a population-based household survey with primary caregivers of children in …

  • Community Health Workers' Experiences in Strengthening the Uptake of Childhood Immunization and Malaria Prevention Services in Urban Sierra Leone

Open Access•Atsuyoshi Ishizumi, Roberta Sutton et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Introduction: Community health workers (CHWs) play an integral role in Sierra Leone's health systems strengthening efforts. Our goal was to understand CHWs' experiences of providing immunization and malaria prevention services in urban settings and explore opportunities to optimize their contributions to these services. Methods: In 2018, we conducted an exploratory qualitative assessment in the Western Area Urban district, which covers most of th…

  • Access, demand, and utilization of childhood immunization services

Open Access•Leora R Feldstein, Roberta Sutton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2020

BACKGROUND: Urban childhood immunization programs face unique challenges in access, utilization, and demand due to frequent population movement between and within localities, sprawling informal settlements, and population heterogeneity. We conducted a cross-sectional household survey in the Western Area Urban district, Sierra Leone, stratified by slums and non-slums as defined by the United Nations Development Program. METHODS: Based on data from…

  • Causes of hospitalization and predictors of HIV-associated mortality at the main referral hospital in Sierra Leone

Open Access•Sulaiman Lakoh, Darlinda F Jiba et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

HIV-infected patients account for a substantial proportion of admissions at Connaught Hospital, with a high morbidity and in-hospital mortality burden. These findings necessitate the implementation of specific measures to enhance early HIV diagnosis and expand treatment access to all HIV-infected patients in Sierra Leone
