Marital coitus in Bangladesh in the 2010s
Background: In Bangladesh, marriage is the sole socially accepted context for sexual intimacy or coitus between partners. Over the past decade, the predictors of coitus in the country have undergone notable changes, including progress in socioeconomic conditions, health behaviours, nutritional status, and contraceptive practices. Despite these changes, there exists no empirical evidence regarding patterns of coitus in Bangladesh, leaving a critic…
Hypertension in Bangladesh
Background: Worldwide, hypertension is more prevalent among men aged 30 and older, but a national survey from Bangladesh shows a different trend. This paper explores the differences in hypertension by sex and age among the Bangladeshi adult population throughout their life span. Methods: We conducted the secondary analysis using data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2017-2018. This nationally representative survey involved…
Depression among married female adolescents in Bangladesh
Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a critical psychiatric condition that is spreading faster among adolescents than adults around the globe. In low and middle-income countries, married female adolescents are more vulnerable to MDD than unmarried female adolescents. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of MDD among currently married female adolescents (CMFAs) in Bangladesh and determine its association with sociodemographic factors, fac…
Changing paradigm of malnutrition among Bangladeshi women of reproductive age and gaps in national Nutrition Policies and Action Plans to tackle the emerging challenge
Objective: The main objective of this paper is to document the changing paradigm of malnutrition in Bangladesh and estimating how this is creating an intergenerational risk. This paper also examines national policy responses to tackle the silent epidemic of double burden of malnutrition. Methods: Publicly available datasets of five Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys were used to see the changing paradigm of malnutrition among Bangladesh wo…
Postpartum family planning counselling during maternity care visits in Bangladesh and its effect on contraceptive initiation
Background: Postpartum family planning (PPFP) is an essential component of birth care that helps avert maternal and newborn health hazards by preventing short-spaced births. Many Asian and African studies found PPFP counselling during antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) effective in increasing PPFP uptake. Studies in Bangladesh, however, provided limited evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating PPFP in maternal healt…
Induced abortion after advent of fetal sex detection technology and child sex at birth
In a context with normal SRB, it was found to be skewed among women who had induced abortion. SRB was relatively more skewed among such women after the advent of ultrasonogram compared to a period without ultrasonogram. Moreover, induced abortion after introduction of fetal sex determination technology increased the likelihood of birth of a male child. These findings suggest the plausibility of GBSS in a sub-group. Further research is needed, par…
Education of household head and maternal healthcare utilization
Integrating HHs into MHC programs can be the immediate call for action while averting male adolescents' school dropouts can be the long-term strategy
Factors that provide protection against intimate partner physical violence among married adolescents in Bangladesh
Background Intimate partner violence (IPV), and especially intimate partner physical violence (IPPV), perpetrated by husbands, and within adolescence marriage are pervasive in Bangladesh. Younger women are more vulnerable to IPPV. Objectives We examined factors associated with IPPV experienced by married adolescents ages 15–19 and tested four hypotheses: (1) adolescent girls married to relatively older husbands, (2) adolescents living in extended…
What shapes attitudes on gender roles among adolescents in Bangladesh
Background: In Bangladesh, large gender differentials exist in outcomes in almost all spheres of life, stemming from conservative norms and attitudes around gender. Adolescence is a crucial period for social-emotional learning that can shape gender norms and attitudes. Objective: The aim of the paper is to investigate the extent to which adolescents hold egalitarian attitudes toward gender roles, and to examine the factors that influence egalitar…
Maternal mortality in Bangladesh
Background: Despite a notable decline in recent decades, maternal mortality in Bangladesh remains high. A thorough understanding of causes of maternal deaths is essential for effective policy and programme planning. Here we report the current level and major causes of maternal deaths in Bangladesh, focusing on care-seeking practices, timing, and place of deaths. Methods: We analysed data from the 2016 Bangladesh Maternal Mortality and Health Care…
Levels, trends, causes, place and time of, care-seeking for, and barriers in preventing indirect maternal deaths in Bangladesh
Background: Eclampsia, haemorrhage, and other direct causes are the primary burden of maternal mortality in Bangladesh, often reducing attention given to indirect maternal deaths (IMDs). However, Sustainable Development Goals may not be achieved without actions to prevent IMDs. We examined the levels, trends, specific causes, timing, place, and care-seeking, and explored the barriers to IMD prevention. Methods: We used three nationally representa…
Haemorrhage-related maternal mortality in Bangladesh
Background: Haemorrhage is a major cause of maternal deaths globally, most of which are preventable and predominantly happen in low and middle-income countries, including Bangladesh. We examine the current levels, trends, time of death, and care-seeking practices for haemorrhage-related maternal deaths in Bangladesh. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis with data from the nationally representative 2001, 2010, and 2016 Bangladesh Maternal Mo…
Preeclampsia and eclampsia-specific maternal mortality in Bangladesh
Background: Despite improvements in many health indicators, maternal mortality has plateaued in Bangladesh. Achieving the global target of reductions in maternal mortality and the associated Sustainable Development Goals will not be possible without actions to prevent deaths due to preeclampsia/eclampsia. Here we examined the levels, trends, specific causes, timing, place, and care-seeking behaviours of women who died due to these two causes. Met…
Trends in women’s height and the effect of early childbearing on height retardation
Background: Depending on race, ethnicity, and region, genetic variants determine human height by 65% to 80%, while the remaining variance of 20% to 35% is influenced by nutrition and other individual or environmental exposures in the early years of life. An improvement in nutrition and health in the early years in a population underprivileged in health and nutrition will likely increase the group's average height. Due to outstanding improvements …
Sex differences in the care of the fetus in the mother's womb and the neonate on her lap
Valuation of sons over daughters introduces sex-biased health, economic, and socio-demographic inequalities in many societies. This study aims to examine fetus-sex differences in maternity services and sex differences in medical care for terminally ill neonates in Bangladesh, using secondary data from the Matlab Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS), maintained by icddr,b since 1966 along with data from the Bangladesh Maternal Mortali…
Demographic, socioeconomic, and biological correlates of hypertension in an adult population
In the coming years, a rising trend in hypertension in Bangladeshi adults is expected due to demographic transition towards older age groups and increase in overweight and obesity among the population of Bangladesh. With more women being hypertensive than men, a targeted approach catering to high risk groups should be thoroughly implemented following the Multisectoral NCD Action Plan 2018-2025. Acting in close collaboration with other ministries/…

BACKGROUND: may underestimate mortality rates particularly for stillbirths. METHODS: and FPH to measure pregnancy outcomes in a household survey in five selected INDEPTH Network sites in Africa and South Asia (Bandim in urban and rural Guinea-Bissau; Dabat in Ethiopia; IgangaMayuge in Uganda; Kintampo in Ghana; Matlab in Bangladesh). The survey will reach >68 000 pregnancies to assess if there is ≥15% difference in stillbirth rates. Additional qu…
