  • The epidemiology of Lassa fever in Ghana

Open Access•Kwasi Atweri Akowuah, Magdalene Sarah Ofori et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Viral disease outbreak remains a key public health concern given its impact on life and livelihood. Historical data suggests Lassa fever is endemic in several West African countries with sporadic cases occurring elsewhere in the region. In February 2023, Ghana recorded its second outbreak of Lassa fever following that of 2011. The present study sought to document the epidemiology of the recent outbreak in Ghana. Methods: The study use…

  • Proof-of-principle of a technology transfer of a dried blood virus neutralisation assay to a Gavi-eligible country

Open Access•Evangeline Obodai, Jonne Terstappen et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

BACKGROUND: Global health clinical research is commonly led by high-income countries (HICs) as low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face barriers to participate, including lack of financial and human capacity and lack of research environment. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine development is also led by HICs, while LMICs carry the burden of life-threatening disease. Representative trials and research capacity strengthening in LMICs are…

  • Phonological adaptation of Arabic names in Atebubu (Bono Region, Ghana)

Open Access•Abdulai Akuamah, John Kofi Odoom et al.•ARTICLE•STUDIES IN AFRICAN LANGUAGES AND…•2023

This paper discusses the phonological processes embedded in some nativised Arabic personal names in Atebubu, in the Bono East Region of Ghana. The study shows that the main phonological processes entrenched in the nativisation process include segment deletion, vowel insertion, prothesis, substitution, consonant deletion, hypocorism, and free variation. These phonological processes are employed as a mitigation strategy to conform to the phonotacti…

  • Assessing the Phonological Processes in Akan Child Language

Open Access•Isaac Nyarko, Kwasi Adomako et al.•ARTICLE•Ghana Journal of Linguistics•2023

This paper seeks to examine the phonological processes embedded in the speech errors of child phonology in Akan, a Niger-Congo (Kwa) language. The study has become necessary because cross-linguistically, several works have been undertaken on child language acquisition but very little or no attention has been given to that of Akan. Most of these works on African languages have centered on the acquisition processes with little on the phonological p…

  • Hybridisation strategies in anglicisation

    Open Access•John Kofi Odoom•ARTICLE•Nomina Africana Journal of…•2023

  • Global, regional, and national disease burden estimates of acute lower respiratory infections due to respiratory syncytial virus in children younger than 5 years in 2019

Open Access•You Li, Xin Wang et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2022

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of acute lower respiratory infection in young children. We previously estimated that in 2015, 33·1 million episodes of RSV-associated acute lower respiratory infection occurred in children aged 0-60 months, resulting in a total of 118 200 deaths worldwide. Since then, several community surveillance studies have been done to obtain a more precise estimation of RSV associated co…

  • Sars-CoV-2 infections among asymptomatic individuals contributed to Covid-19 cases

Open Access•Kwasi Atweri Akowuah, Richard Akuffo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background: The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) by asymptomatic individuals has been reported since the early stages of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in various parts of the world. However, there are limited data regarding SARS-CoV-2 among asymptomatic individuals in Ghana. The aim of the study was to use test data of prospective travelers from Ghana as a proxy to estimate the contribution…

  • Evaluation of AFP surveillance indicators in polio-free Ghana, 2009–2013

Open Access•John Kofi Odoom, Nana Afia Asante Ntim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Both laboratory and epidemiological surveillance for AFP were efficient and many WHO targets were met. However, due to the risk of poliovirus importation prior to global eradication, longterm surveillance is required to provide a high degree of confidence in prevention of poliovirus infection in Ghana. Thus, efforts should be made to strengthen regional performance and to follow-up on all AFP cases in order to establish proper diagnoses for the c…

  • Troop education and avian influenza surveillance in military barracks in Ghana, 2011

Open Access•John Kofi Odoom, Samuel Bel‐Nono et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Active surveillance revealed that there was no AI circulation in the military barracks in April 2011. Though participants demonstrated good knowledge of pandemic avian influenza, biosecurity practices were minimal. Sustained educational programs are needed to further strengthen avian influenza surveillance and prevention in military barracks
