Reservoir Ages in the Western Tropical North Atlantic from One Coral off Martinique Island (Lesser Antilles)
Sea surface reservoir ages (R) are reported from radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements of the annual growth bands of coral Siderastrea siderea collected on the Atlantic coast off Martinique Island, in the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc. Mean values of R are similar between 1835 and 1845 during pre-anthropogenic times at 385±30 yr and between 1895 and 1905 at 382±20 yr when there was a huge eruption from the Montagne Pelée volcano in 1902–1903. A new late Pleistocene archaeological sequence in South America
The date of the first settlement of the Americas remains a contentious subject. Previous claims for very early occupation at Pedra Furada in Brazil were not universally accepted (see Meltzeret al.1994). New work at the rockshelter of Boqueirão da Pedra Furada and at the nearby open-air site of Vale da Pedra Furada have however produced new evidence for human occupation extending back more than 20 000 years. Paired 14 C and 230 Th/U Dating of Surface Corals from the Marquesas and Vanuatu (Sub-Equatorial Pacific) in the 3000 to 15,000 Cal Yr Interval
Paired radiocarbon and 230 Th/U dating was performed on 13 surface corals from submerged reefs in the Marquesas and from raised terraces in Vanuatu. The absolute ages of the corals analyzed ranged from 3000 to 15,000 cal yr. Estimates of the difference between the absolute and 14 C ages of these corals are in agreement with previous determinations up until 11,500 cal yr. The resulting mean sea surface reservoir age R is determined at 390 ± 60 yr …
