Dining Across the Decades in Rajasthan, India
I tell tales of dining and drinking across three decades in Rajasthan, India, evoking memories of challenge and character defining choices. From whom and with whom I dine or drink proves to be an act expressing relative purity (shuddha) and adherence to principle (dharma). In post-Independence India, new colonies of garden suburbs served an educated citizenry to integrate science and nature into their daily life. However, one such colony of bungalows ( kothi) and gardens, begun in Jaipur in the 1950s, after two generations of incremental construction, has become in the 1990s similar to an old city ward with towering courtyard houses ( haveli) abutting the property lines. Indian conceptions about the earth's recycling of wastes is an important domain for investigation. The use of dust as a cleansing agent leads us to inquire into local notions about elemental processes, the tropic cycle, and the role of the streets as venue and traffic as process in recycling the detritus and castaways of daily life. We relate local expectations about waste disposal to textual sources, utilise Ayurvedic theory and practice to unde…

Rainfall is very unreliable in western Rajasthan and drought and famine are frequent. Applying an ecological-anthropological approach, this study shows how different socio-economic and caste groups adopt different adaptive strategies for subsistence and demonstrates the inter-relationships between physical, social, economic and political factors in the human ecology of the region
