Open Access•Salwa Massad, Mervett Isbeih et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The prevalence of risk factors for NCDs was notably high in oPt. These results underscore the urgent need for interventions to reduce the imminent burden of NCDs within this vulnerable population. The worsening crisis in Gaza demands immediate action. Unified and decisive global efforts are essential to halt the war in Gaza, secure a permanent ceasefire, and ensure access to humanitarian aid. While rebuilding the healthcare system will be a long-…

  • National, regional, and global trends in insufficient physical activity among adults from 2000 to 2022: A pooled analysis of 507 population-based surveys with 5·7 million participants

Open Access•Tessa Strain, Seymour Flaxman et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Global Health•2024

BACKGROUND: Insufficient physical activity increases the risk of non-communicable diseases, poor physical and cognitive function, weight gain, and mental ill-health. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of insufficient physical activity for 197 countries and territories, from 2000 to 2022. METHODS: We collated physical activity reported …

  • Supervised Machine Learning-Based Models for Predicting Raised Blood Sugar

Open Access•Marwa Mustafa Owess, Amani Yousef Owda et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Raised blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is considered a strong indicator of prediabetes or diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) affecting the adult population. Recently, the prevalence of diabetes has been increasing at a faster rate, especially in developing countries. The primary concern associated with diabetes is the potential for serious health complications to occur if it is not diagnose…

  • Political violence and mental health of Bedouin children in the West Bank, Palestine: A cross-sectional study

Salwa Massad, Umaiyeh Khammash et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•2017

The Bedouin population is among the most vulnerable in Palestine, subject to forced relocation and lacking basic necessities, including water and electricity. To our knowledge, there are no studies on the mental health of Palestinian Bedouin children. A cross-sectional household survey was conducted examining exposures to traumatic events and mental health among 455 refugee children between the ages of 5-16 years old, and randomly selected from 1…

  • Substance use among Palestinian youth in the West Bank, Palestine: A qualitative investigation

Open Access•Salwa Massad, Salwa G Massad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Although this study uses a purposive sample, the results suggest that substance use exists among Palestinian youth. Risk behaviors are a concern given inadequate youth-friendly counseling services and the strong cultural constraints on open discussion or education about the impact of high risk behaviors. These barriers to treatment and counseling can exacerbate the health and social consequences of alcohol abuse and illicit drug use

  • Perceptions of sexual risk behavior among Palestinian youth in the West Bank: A qualitative investigation

Open Access•Salwa Massad, Salwa G Massad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

In contrast with the conservative social context of the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), the findings suggest that sexual activities outside marriage may be more common than is currently assumed. Sexual behavior in the oPt is a concern because of the low awareness of the potential health consequences. The results draw attention to the need to incorporate sexual reproductive health into the national agenda and ensure that it is included in th…

  • Nutritional status of Palestinian preschoolers in the Gaza Strip: A cross-sectional study

Open Access•Salwa Massad, Salwa G Massad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The authors examined factors associated with nutritional resilience/vulnerability among preschoolers in the Gaza Strip in 2007, where political violence and deprivation are widespread. This cross-sectional study was carried out in 2007 using random sampling of kindergartens in order to select 350 preschoolers. Binary logistic regression was used to compare resilient (adequate nutrition) and vulnerable (stunted) groups with those with moderate nut…
