Ecology, Evolution, and the Search for Cultural Origins
This paper examines the ecological explanation offered by Marvin Harris for the origin of pig prohibition in Islam, using the case to evaluate the functional-ecological paradigm and its treatment of cultural origins. Five majorpoints are addressed. First, a survey of the biological literature reveals that functional-ecological theory and evolutionary theory are distinct, but related. While functional ecology explains how systems work, evolutionar…
The Supranational Organization of Production
Fresh theoretical perspectives are required for understanding the rapid expansion of international economic activity and especially the organization of production on a world scale through institutions of multinational enterprise. Ananthropological evolutionary approach which sees these developments as part of the generation of a new system at a supranational level of sociocultural integration seems appropiate to the task. The creation of such a n…
Shifts in Production and Organization
Periods of intensification alternate with periods of shift of mode of production in pristine-state sequences; attendant upon these are regular shifts in sociopolitical organization. This paper develops an evolutionary model of these regularities and their relation to other traditional questions of state formation. Specifically it notes that rarely if ever do such transformations affect only a single precocious polity, at any level of sociocultura…
Ecology, Culture, Social Organization, and State Formation in Southeast Asia [and Comments and Reply]
In this paper I call attention to the significance of Southeast Asia to discussions of the nature of state formation. Southeast Asian states do not appear to have developed into the fully centralized, highly stratified, totalitarian regimes held to typify other regions of Asia, such a…
