Social determinants of health and quality of life among Korean Americans with chronic hepatitis B
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection disproportionately affects Korean Americans, who often experience persistent social and structural challenges that may influence quality of life. This study examined associations between social determinants of health …
Limited English proficiency, acculturative stress, and quality of life among Korean American patients with chronic hepatitis B
This study indicates that acculturative stress plays an important role in mediating the relationship between LEP and both physical and mental health outcomes. Future studies will develop interventions to achieve better health outcomes by reducing acculturative stress in this population
HBV Transmission Knowledge Among Korean-American Chronic Hepatitis B Patients in the United States
Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a condition that disproportionately affects Asian Americans in the United States. Knowledge of transmission is crucial for CHB patients to practice prevention methods to limit the spread of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), but also live their lives free from unwarranted fears or restrictions. Among Asian CHB patients, several misperceptions about HBV transmission have been identified. This analysis aims to assess the curr…

Acculturation and Hypertension Diagnoses Among Hispanics in California
A comparison of the influencing factors of chronic pain and quality of life between older Koreans and Korean–Americans with chronic pain
The data showed that multimorbidity and depressive symptoms play critical roles for explaining chronic pain in older Koreans and KAs and ultimately negatively influence quality of life. Future intervention program to improve quality of life in older adults with chronic pain should consider the different cultural aspects affecting quality of life for Koreans and KAs

The association of perceived discrimination and depressive symptoms among Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese Americans
OBJECTIVES: Few studies have investigated ethnic differences in discrimination and depressive symptoms, and the link between them among foreign-born Asian Americans. This study identifies if depressive symptoms and perceived discrimination differ by Asian ethnicity, and if perceived discrimination is associated with depressive symptoms among foreign-born Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese Americans. METHODS: This study uses data from the Asian Ameri…

Health Examination Is Not a Priority for Less Acculturated Asian Americans
Ethnic Group Differences in Health Outcomes Among Asian American Men in California
The numbers of Asian American men are continually increasing, yet limited research exists on this understudied population. Addressing this lack of research is necessary to better inform how best to improve quality of care. This study examined health outcome differences across ethnically diverse groups of Asian American men in California, compared with non-Hispanic White men. Using data from the 2007, 2009, and 2011-2012 California Health Intervie…
Pathways from Early Childhood Adversity to Later Adult Drug Use and Psychological Distress
Drawing on the life course perspective, this research addresses the direct and indirect pathways between childhood adversity and midlife psychological distress and drug use across a majority of the life span in an African American cohort ( N = 1,242) followed from age 6 to 42 (1966 to 2002). Results from structural equation models highlight the impact of low childhood socioeconomic status (SES), poor maternal mental health, and the role of first-…
The association between nutrition transition score and measures of obesity
BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that US Latinos have a higher prevalence of obesity than White Americans. However, obesity may differ by pre-immigration factors and Latinos' cultural representations of ideal body image. This paper explores whether country of origin's stage in the nutrition transition is related to Latino immigrants' BMI category and self-perception of weight. METHODS: Primary data originated from a cross-sectional questionnaire of La…

Impact of Adult Sons' Incarceration on African American Mothers' Psychological Distress
This longitudinal study examines the effect of sons' incarceration on their mothers' psychological distress. Interviews were conducted over the life course with a community cohort of African American mothers who had children in first grade in 1966 - 1967 when the study began (N =615). Thirty years later, their sons had significant rates of incarceration (22.4%). Structural equation modeling showed that the more recent the incarceration, the great…

Effects of Poverty and Family Stress Over Three Decades on the Functional Status of Older African American Women
Despite similar earlier life circumstances and health, there was substantial heterogeneity in functioning in early old age. Long-term poverty and family stress were strongly associated with being low functioning. Early poverty and transient family problems did not have lasting health effects, underscoring the plasticity of human development and the importance of interventions that can alter life course trajectories

A healthy mistrust
BACKGROUND: Perceived racial discrimination is one factor which may discourage ethnic minorities from using healthcare. However, existing research only partially explains why some persons do accept health promotion messages and use preventive care, while others do not. This analysis explores 1) the psychosocial characteristics of those, within disadvantaged groups, who identify their previous experiences as racially discriminatory, 2) the extent …
