Progress in epidemic-ready primary health care
Primary healthcare (PHC) is the first point of contact with communities and essential for epidemic preparedness. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in PHC resilience. Epidemic Ready Primary Healthcare (ERPHC) was designed to bridge these gaps by strengthening PHC to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks while maintaining essential services. An ERPHC pilot was initiated in December 2023 in 654 PHC facilities across Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sierra Leo…
Treatment outcomes in people with diabetes and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) enrolled in the STREAM clinical trial
There is limited evidence on the effect of DM co-morbidity in those undergoing treatment for MDR-TB. We report post-hoc analyses of participants from the STREAM Clinical Trial (Stage 1 and 2 combined). Participants who self-reported diabetes, had random blood glucose ≥200mg/dl at baseline, or reported taking concomitant medication for diabetes were classified as the DM group. In total, 896 (n=84 DM, n=812 non-DM) and 976 (n=87 DM, n=889 non-DM) p…
Development of Somaliland national harmonised medical curriculum

PROCESS: The Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Health Development produced a Medical Education Policy 2018. Development of a simple and effective online training for health workers
High completion rates, significant learning gains and positive feedback indicate that self-paced, mobile-ready training that emphasizes short, low-stakes assessment questions can be an effective, scalable way to train HWs who choose to enroll. Low pre-test scores suggest that there are gaps in IPC knowledge among this learner population
Safer primary healthcare facilities are needed to protect healthcare workers and maintain essential services
Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of infection from SARS-CoV-2 and other disease pathogens, which take a disproportionate toll on HCWs, with substantial cost to health systems. Improved infection prevention and control (IPC) programmes can protect HCWs, especially in resource-limited settings where the health workforce is scarcest, and ensure patient safety and continuity of essential health services. In response to the COVID-19 pan…
