    Open Access•Jiří Svoboda, Jiřı́svoboda et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2020•Citada por: 4

With the end of MIS3, the unity of larger Gravettian settlements based predominantly on mammoth exploitation split into a mosaic of smaller Epigravettian sites with specific behaviors and economies. Based on C14 chronology, the site of Stránská skála IV (together with Grubgraben, Ságvár and Kašov), correlates with a brief warm period after the Last Glacial Maximum around 22 ka calBP. We detected two main accumulations of predominantly horse bones…

  • Carnivores in the everyday life of Gravettian hunters-gatherers in Central Europe

    Open Access•Piotr Wojtal, Jiří Svoboda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2020•Citada por: 12•Referências: 31

Insights into human life in Central Europe at ~30–20,000 years ago have come from studies of archaeological and paleontological materials in Czechia, Poland, and Slovakia, including assemblages from sites such as Dolní Věstonice I and II, Pavlov I, Kraków Spadzista, Jaksice II, and Moravany–Lopata II. Pavlovian mammal bone assemblages from settlements in South Moravia are dominated by small (birds, hares, foxes) and medium sized animals (wolves, …

  • Friend or foe? Large canid remains from Pavlovian sites and their archaeozoological context

    Open Access•J Wilczyński, Gregory Haynes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2020•Citada por: 5•Referências: 61

In this paper we discuss recent claims that dogs were first domesticated from wild wolves in the Middle Upper Paleolithic (MUP), about 27 ka BP. According to our data, we think the presence of large canids at the Pavlovian/MUP sites is a result of hunting specialization and not a sign of an early process of dog domestication. Our interpretation is supported by the following observations, whose implications we discuss: (1) Pavlovian faunal assembl…

  • Human and non‐human taphonomic effects on faunal remains from the Late Upper Paleolithic

Open Access•Soňa Boriová, Sandra Sázelová et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Referências: 24

This paper focuses on two accumulations of horse bones at the Stránská skála IV site, dated from around the Last Glacial Maximum (Epigravettian). Osteological material was subjected to taxonomical and taphonomical analyses. The results confirmed the prevalence of horses, and quantitative analyses indicated a minimum of 10 individuals, which is the approximate size of a herd. The taphonomical analyses did not confirm any traces of human activities…

The rich earlier Mid Upper Palaeolithic (Pavlovian) sites of Dolní Vĕstonice I and II and Pavlov I (∼32,000-∼30,000 cal BP) in southern Moravia (Czech Republic) have yielded a series of human burials, isolated pairs of extremities and isolated bones and teeth. The burials occurred within and adjacent to the remains of structures ('huts'), among domestic debris. Two of them were adjacent to mammoth bone dumps, but none of them was directly associa…

Structure of Pavlovian art The Dolní Věstonice – Pavlov – Milovice area in south Moravia forms a typical example of a densely settled Gravettian (Pavlovian) hunters’ area, showing an internal hierarchy in terms of importance and size of the sites. Until now, occurrence of art objects was limited to large aggregation sites that resulted from repeated human activities at one place, and represent palimpsests of intensive reoccupations (Pavlov I, Dol…

  • Plant foods in the Upper Palaeolithic at Dolní Vӗstonice? Parenchyma redux

    Open Access•A J E Pryor, Madeline Steele et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2013•Citada por: 12•Referências: 28

The classic image of Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers in Europe envisages them hunting large mammals in largely treeless landscapes. That is partly due to the nature of the surviving archaeological evidence, and the poor preservation of plant remains at such ancient sites. As this study illustrates, however, the potential of Upper Palaeolithic sites to yield macrofossil remains of plants gathered and processed by human groups has been underest…

Open Access•Anna Revedin, Biancamaria Aranguren et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2010

European Paleolithic subsistence is assumed to have been largely based on animal protein and fat, whereas evidence for plant consumption is rare. We present evidence of starch grains from various wild plants on the surfaces of grinding tools at the sites of Bilancino II (Italy), Kostenki 16–Uglyanka (Russia), and Pavlov VI (Czech Republic). The samples originate from a variety of geographical and environmental contexts, ranging from northeastern …

This work focuses on paleopathological analysis of one of the skeletons from the Gravettian triple burial of Dolní Věstonice (Moravia) and addresses issues of Upper Paleolithic funerary behavior. The burial includes the well‐preserved skeletons of three young individuals. The skeleton in the middle (DV 15) is pathological and very problematic to sex; the other two (DV 13 and DV 14) are males and lie in an unusual position. The young age, the poss…
