The relationship of social roles to speech patterns is dynamic and intimately dependent on varying interaction contexts. The present study documents differences between female and male speech as a contextualized phenomenon, and shows that using "proper" speech is a female strategy for producing socially effective speech while conforming to a gender identity devaluing direct verbal assertiveness.
