Nikushike namna gani? (How should I hold you?) The questions that women ask motorbike taxis operators are just one of the many ways that this new mode of transportation in both urban and rural Kenya have become a vehicle for laughter, outrage, (in)dignity and wealth. This paper focuses on moments of delight in the danger-filled work of motorbike taxi operators in Kenya. How much joy do boda boda (motorbike taxis) generate in modern Kenya? The del…

  • Inscribing memory, healing a nation

Catherine Muhoma, Joyce Nyairo•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2011•Citada por: 6•Referências: 13

The violence in the wake of the Kenya general elections in December 2007 found one of its most profoundly haunting, provocative and creative expressions in a photographic text called Kenya Burning. This article renders a reading of photographs in Kenya Burning in an attempt to lay bare the complex sphere of multiple narratives that speak to the issues of what ails Kenya. We argue that as an artistic piece of work, the picture-text represents the …

  • Kenyan gospel sountracks

    Joyce Nyairo•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cultural Studies•2008•Citada por: 4•Referências: 16

This paper traces the growth and nature of gospel music in Kenya. It argues that regardless of whether gospel music is defined by structure or content it is a genre that cannot be understood outside the complex matrix of transcultural links between Africa, Europe and America – colonial and contemporary. As an interminably hybrid form, modern gospel music in Kenya appropriates the sonic and lyrical texture of a variety of genres – from European ch…

    Open Access•Joyce Nyairo•CHAPTER•Cities in Contemporary Africa•2006

A significant share of the popular music created by youthful urban groups in Kenya over the last ten years generates various discourses of the capital city, Nairobi. My analysis of some of this output proceeds by showing how the relationship between cultural forms, such as music, and places is symbiotic. Places help to shape cultural forms and cultural forms are in turn crucial in mediating our understandings of spaces and places (Connell and Gib…

    Joyce Nyairo•ARTICLE•Scrutiny2•2004•Citada por: 10•Referências: 11

Cultural practices such as music can be read for the ways in which they both indicate and formulate contexts. This reading of contemporary Kenyan popular music focuses on the mobility and diffusion of popular music in order to analyse intertextuality in local songtexts. The data is provided by two seminal chart hits — Hardstone's “Uhiki” (Wedding; 1997) and Gidi Gidi Maji Maji's “Ting badi malo” (Lift up your arms; 1999). The argument proceeds by…
