  • Contribution of biomass burning to black carbon deposition on Andean glaciers

    Open Access•E X Bonilla, Loretta J Mickley et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Andean glaciers have melted rapidly since the 1960s. While some melting is likely due to anthropogenic climate change driven by increasing greenhouse gases, deposition of light-absorbing particles such as black carbon (BC) may also play a role. We hypothesize that BC from fires in the Amazon Basin and elsewhere may be deposited on Andean glaciers, reducing the surface albedo and inducing further melting. Here we investigate the role of BC deposit…

  • Large-scale circulation dominated precipitation variation and its effect on potential water availability across the Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Xiuping Li, Lei Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

The large-scale circulation, Indian summer monsoon (ISM), has a strong influence on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) since its onset and intensity have profound impacts on regional precipitation, which then can supply water for glaciers, lakes, rivers and social demands. Weakening monsoon intensity and longer monsoon duration seem contradictory, as a weaker monsoon tends to produce less precipitation, while a longer duration increases the probability of …

  • Late-Holocene Indian summer monsoon variability revealed from a 3300-year-long lake sediment record from Nir’pa Co, southeastern Tibet

    Open Access•Broxton W Bird, Yanbin Lei et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 3•Referências: 7

Sedimentological and geochemical results from Nir’pa Co, an alpine lake on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, detail late-Holocene Indian summer monsoon (ISM) hydroclimate during the last 3300 years. Constrained by modern calibration, elevated silt and lithics and low sand and clay between 3.3 and 2.4 ka and 1.3 ka and the present indicate two pluvial phases with lake levels near their current overflow elevation. Between 2.4 and 1.3 ka, a sharp in…

  • Recently exposed vegetation reveals Holocene changes in the extent of the Quelccaya Ice Cap, Peru

    Open Access•Aron M Buffen, A Buffen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Radiocarbon dating of well-preserved, in-place vegetation exposed by the retreating Quelccaya Ice Cap of southeastern Peru constrains the last time the ice cap's extent was smaller than at present. Seventeen plant samples from two sites along the central western margin collectively date to 4700 and 5100 cal yr BP and strongly indicate that current ice cap retreat is unprecedented over the past ∼ 5 millennia. Seventeen vegetation samples interbedd…

  • Ice-Core Pollen Record of Climatic Changes in the Central Andes during the last 400 yr

    Open Access•Kam‐biu Liu, Kam-biu Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

This paper presents a high-resolution ice-core pollen record from the Sajama Ice Cap, Bolivia, that spans the last 400 yr. The pollen record corroborates the oxygen isotopic and ice accumulation records from the Quelccaya Ice Cap and supports the scenario that the Little Ice Age (LIA) consisted of two distinct phases "a wet period from AD 1500 to 1700, and a dry period from AD 1700 to 1880. During the dry period xerophytic shrubs expanded to repl…

  • Kilimanjaro Ice Core Records

    Open Access•Lonnie G Thompson, Ellen Mosley-Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2002

Six ice cores from Kilimanjaro provide an ∼11.7-thousand-year record of Holocene climate and environmental variability for eastern equatorial Africa, including three periods of abrupt climate change: ∼8.3, ∼5.2, and ∼4 thousand years ago (ka). The latter is coincident with the “First Dark Age,” the period of the greatest historically recorded drought in tropical Africa. Variable deposition of F – and Na + during the African Humid Period suggests …

  • Tropical Climate Instability

Open Access•Lonnie G Thompson, Tandong Yao et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1997

An ice core record from the Guliya ice cap on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau provides evidence of regional climatic conditions over the last glacial cycle. 36 Cl data suggest that the deepest 20 meters of the core may be more than 500,000 years old. The δ 18 O change across Termination I is ∼5.4 per mil, similar to that in the Huascarán (Peru) and polar ice cores. Three Guliya interstadials (Stages 3, 5a, and 5c) are marked by increases in δ 18 O va…

  • Late Glacial Stage and Holocene Tropical Ice Core Records from Huascarán, Peru

    Open Access•Lonnie G Thompson, Ellen Mosley-Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1995

Two ice cores from the col of Huascarán in the north-central Andes of Peru contain a paleoclimatic history extending well into the Wisconsinan (Würm) Glacial Stage and include evidence of the Younger Dryas cool phase. Glacial stage conditions at high elevations in the tropics appear to have been as much as 8° to 12°C cooler than today, the atmosphere contained about 200 times as much dust, and the Amazon Basin forest cover may have been much less…

  • Late Holocene ice core records of climate and environment from the tropical Andes, Peru

    Open Access•Lonnie G Thompson•ARTICLE•Bulletin de l’Institut français…•1995

A 1 500-year history of climatic and environmental variations from the Quelccaya ice cap (13o56'S, 70o50'W, 5 670 m a.s.l.) is compared to a similar 3 000-year ice core record from the col of Huascarán (9o06'S, 77o 36'W, 6 048 m a.s.l.). The parameters which are presented are oxygen isotopic ratios (δ18O), considered to be indicative of temperature, insoluble dust, and (for Huascarán only) nitrate concentrations (NO3) which is indicative of veget…

  • Temporal and spatial variations of climate in China during the last 10 000 years

Open Access•Zhaodong Feng, Zhaodong Feng Zhaodong Feng et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1993•Citada por: 3•Referências: 1

Archaeological, geological, historical, tree-ring and instrumental data indicate that the last 10 000 years were characterized in China by climatic variations at various temporal and spatial scales. The period from 10 000 to 9000 BP was one of increasing temperature. The Holocene 'Optimal Period' occurred approximately between 9000 and 3000 BP, within which there were two major cool episodes around 7300 amd 5700 BP and one minor cool episode arou…

  • Cultural impacts of severe droughts in the prehistoric Andes

Izumi Shimada, Crystal Barker Schaaf et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1991•Citada por: 73•Referências: 40

Late in the sixth century, Andean peoples experienced major cultural upheavals, including a notable settlement shift of the classic Mochica culture on the northern Peruvian coast. A recently established annual precipitation record derived from ice cores from the Quelccaya glacier in southern Peru allows assessment of the possible role of climatic disturbances in northern Peru. Both areas are in the same tropical climatic regime. A comparison betw…

Two ice cores, covering 1500 years of climatic information, from the summit (5670 meters) of the tropical Quelccaya ice cap, in the Andes of southern Peru, provide information on general environmental conditions including droughts, volcanic activity, moisture sources, temperature, and glacier net balance. The net balance record reconstructed from these cores reflects major precipitation trends for the southern Andes of Peru. These records indicat…

  • Nine Centuries of Microparticle Deposition at the South Pole

    Open Access•Ellen Mosley-Thompson, Lonnie G Thompson•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1982

The analysis of microparticles in a 101-m core from Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica has revealed a substantial increase in total particle concentration between approximately 1450 and 1850 A.D., a period encompassing the latest neoglacial interval or Little Ice Age. It is likely that this reflects a simultaneous increase in the concentration of particulate material in the Antarctic atmosphere. This is important climatologically, for …
