Tell el-Amarna, Autumn 2024 to Spring 2025
Fieldwork at Amarna from autumn 2024 to spring 2025 involved excavation and survey in Amarna’s housing areas, including the house of the vizier Nakht, and the continuation of several post-excavation projects. The post-excavation work reported on here is the study of human skeletal materials, pottery, and matting from the non-elite cemeteries; relief fragments from the Maru-Aten; zooarchaeological samples from the house of Panehesy; and lithics an…
First Identification of Bone Whistle‐Use in Dynastic Egypt
Despite over 200 years of intensive academic interest in Pharaonic Egypt, little focus has been given to understanding the production, use, and diversity of the osseous material culture created by this enigmatic culture. Here, the authors present the identification of a bone whistle recovered from the Eighteenth Dynasty (late 14 th century bc ) city of Akhetaten (modern Amarna), Middle Egypt. Found at the Stone Village, a peripheral workers' sett…
Pigeons and papyrus at Amarna
Ancient Egyptian art features many carefully observed depictions of wild animals and birds. A famous example is the late Eighteenth Dynasty (fourteenth-century BC) wall paintings of the Green Room in the North Palace at Amarna, where naturalistic depictions of birds feature prominently. Their taxonomic identity, however, is not resolved in all cases. Here, the authors revisit the facsimiles produced in the 1920s by Nina de Garis Davies. Mindful o…
Rock art imagery as a proxy for Holocene environmental change
The animal species depicted in the rock art of Shuwaymis, Saudi Arabia, provide a record of Holocene climatic changes, as seen by the engravers. Of 1903 animal engravings, 1514 contained sufficient detail to allow identification with confidence. In addition, the stratigraphy of the engravings and the depiction of domesticates provide a broad chronological framework that allows a division into images created during the Holocene humid phase and ani…
Stratified Pleistocene vertebrates with a new record of a jaguar-sized pantherine (Panthera cf. gombaszogensis) from northern Saudi Arabia
Remote sensing and GIS techniques for reconstructing Arabian palaeohydrology and identifying archaeological sites
Multi-scale Acheulean landscape survey in the Arabian Desert
Middle to Late Pleistocene human habitation in the western Nefud Desert, Saudi Arabia
The Cyrenaican Prehistory Project 2012
The paper reports on the sixth season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project (CPP) undertaken in September 2012. As in the spring 2012 season, work focussed on the Haua Fteah cave and on studies of materials excavated in previous seasons, with no fieldwork undertaken elsewhere in the Gebel Akhdar. An important discovery, in a sounding excavated below the base of McBurney's 1955 Deep Sounding (Trench S), is of a rockfall or roof collaps…
The Tràng An Project
Tràng An is a Vietnamese government supported cultural and ecological park development covering 2,500 hectares that is centred on an isolated massif on the southern edge of the Song Hong delta in Ninh Bình Province, north Vietnam (Fig. 1). The archaeological investigation of Tràng An is being led jointly by the Xuan Truong Construction Corporation and the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, under the direction…
Raptor and owl bone from Niah Caves, Sarawak
This paper reports on the findings of a preliminary investigation of raptor (Accipitriformes) and owl (Strigiformes) bones recovered during the original archaeological investigations of the Niah Caves during the 1950s and 1960s. Observations of morphological characteristics that were utilised to distinguish humeri and tarsometatarsi of selected species are included. A total of 48 archaeological specimens were identified, representing five genera …
