Late Pleistocene–Holocene sedimentation and Late Upper Paleolithic–Neolithic human occupation of the Vitim River valley (Baikal–Patom Highlands, Eastern Siberia) at Kovrizhka I–VI.
The Kovrizhka sites are some of the most studied and highly informative for the entire northern Cis-Baikal region of Siberia and illustrate the history and development of ancient cultures in the Vitim area during the Late Upper Paleolithic to Early Neolithic. To better understand human settlement practices during this time, we constructed a model of Late Quaternary landscape formation and human occupation in the Vitim River valley based on a geom…
What did they do with ochre? (results of traceological study of stone artifacts of the Kovrizhka IV site, Upper Paleolithic, Vitim River, Baikal-Patom Highlands)
The Upper Paleolithic archaeology of the Eastern Siberia has been discussing the use of ochre for a symbolic or utilitarian purpose. A feature of the lower (6, 3B, 3/2, 3/1, 2G, 2B) cultural horizons of the Kovrizhka IV site, 19–18 ka BP, (Vitim River, Baikal-Patom Upland) is the ochre (hematite) found in vari ous site contexts such as dwellings, as well as hearth complexes. This article presents a traceological study of artifacts from 3B, 4 and …
Variation of Lithic Assemblages and Lithic Technologies at Late Upper Paleolithic Horizons 6–2Б of Kovrizhka IV, the Lower Vitim
Variation of Lithic Assemblages and Lithic Technologies at Late Upper Paleolithic Horizons 6–2Б of Kovrizhka IV, the Lower Vitim
The article addresses cultural horizons 6–2Б at Kovrizhka IV on the Vitim River, dating to ~19–18.5 ka BP. The best studied are cultural horizons 6, 3Б, 3/2, 2Г, and 2Б. The largest assemblage (~55 thousand pieces) comes from horizon 3Б, and the smallest (~1.4 thousand pieces) from horizon 2Г. In generalized technological and typological terms, techniques include pressure detachment of microblades, production of blades up to 12 cm long, coarse pr…
Technical-Typologic Characteristic of Microcores of the Cultural Horizon 3B of the Kovrizhka IV Site (Vitim River, Baikal-Pathom Uplands) with Application of Morphometry Based on 3D Modelling
Purpose. The study consists of results of a technical-typologic analysis of microcores and ski-spalls from 3B cultural horizon of the Kovrizhka IV site (Lower Vitim and Baikal-Pathom Uplands) with morphometric characteristics obtained by means of 3D modelling. This assemblage is dated to about 18.8 cal ka BP and refers to the early phase of the LUP. Production of microblades is represented by 5 microcores, 2 preforms, 3 ski-spalls, 174 whole and …
Excavations at Kovrizhka IV site and its bearing on research of the Late Upper Paleolithic and human adaptation to the environment of last glacial maximum in Baikal-Patom Highlands, Siberia
Chronology of glacial megafloods in the Baikal-Patom Upland (South Siberia)
Model of the Late Quaternary deposits formation at the geoarchaeological ensemble of Kovrizhka and adaptation of ancient man to the hydrological regime of the Vitim River and the restructuring of the …
As a result of geomorphological research and the analysis of calibrated radiocarbon dates of the archaeo-logical sites of Kovrizhka I-VI (Baikal-Patom Uplands), a model of formation of the Late Quaternary deposits of the Vitim valley within the area of the Kovrizhka ensemble has been developed. Based on this, and according to the archaeological data, the history of human habitation during the late Upper Paleolithic - Early Neolithic (19-6 ka BP) …

Newly Discovered Remains of a Late Upper Paleolithic Dwelling in the Northern Baikal Area

Late Upper Paleolithic of the Lower Vitim (Based on the Data of Kovrizhka-III–IV and Bol’shoi Yakor’-I Sites)
The multilayer sites Kovrizhka-IV and Bol’shoi Yakor’-I, Kovrizhka-III (Baikal-Patom Highlands, Lower Vitim) make it possible to characterize the Late Upper Paleolithic (LUP) at the early, 19–17 Kyr BP, and late, 15–13 Kyr BC, stages, respectively. The high information potential makes it possible to highlight the culture and activities of the inhabitants in terms of lithic production and microblade splitting, living features, settling, hunting, t…

Ocher in Late Paleolithic Contexts at the Kovrizhka IV Site, the Baikal-Patom Highlands (Eastern Siberia, Russia)
This paper deals with numerous ocher remains found in cultural layers 6, 2G, and 2B of the Paleolithic site Kovrizhka IV on the Vitim River, in the Baikal-Patom Highlands (Eastern Siberia). These layers are dated by radiocarbon to the interval of ~19.2–18.3 ka cal BP. In cultural layers 2B and 2G, ocher colored the living fl oors and combustion areas. Stratigraphic observations indicate that this was done at the very beginning of the occupation. …
Ivory Figurines and the Symbolic Context of a Paleolithic Dwelling at Kovrizhka IV on the Lower Vitim River, Eastern Siberia
One of the most important recent discoveries made on the Vitim River (Baikal-Patom plateau, Eastern Siberia) is that of a Paleolithic dwelling at Kovrizhka IV, layer 6. It reveals markers of symbolic activity, such as two anthropomorphic ivory figurines. They were associated with a likewise non-utilitarian context: reiterating boulder and slab pavements, ocher on lithics, on a figurine, and around, evidence of manipulations with the central heart…
Argillite Artifacts and Final Pleistocene to Middle Holocene Cultural Links Across the Vitim River Basin (Baikal Region)
This paper presents the results of X-ray fl uorescence and X-ray diffraction analyses of argillite artifacts from Kovrizhka I on the lower Vitim and Ust-Karenga XVI on the upper Vitim. The specimens from layer 2 of Kovrizhka I date to ca 6 radiocarbon ka BP and belong to a non-ceramic culture with microblades. Two ritual pits at Ust-Karenga XVI, dating to 7–6 radiocarbon ka BP and associated with the late stage of the Ust-Karenga Neolithic cultur…
