  • Action needed to make carbon offsets from forest conservation work for climate change mitigation

    Open Access•Thales A P West, Sven Wunder et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2023

Carbon offsets from voluntary avoided-deforestation projects are generated on the basis of performance in relation to ex ante deforestation baselines. We examined the effects of 26 such project sites in six countries on three continents using synthetic control methods for causal inference. We found that most projects have not significantly reduced deforestation. For projects that did, reductions were substantially lower than claimed. This reflect…

  • Anthropogenic climate change contribution to wildfire-prone weather conditions in the Cerrado and Arc of deforestation

Open Access•Sihan Li, Sarah Sparrow et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

2015 saw the strongest El Niño event in the historical record, resulting in extreme drought conditions in Brazil. As drought conditions may also lead to greater fire danger, this study uses the 2015 fire in Brazil as a case study to examine whether and to what extent human-induced climate change has contributed to the fire weather conditions in the Cerrado and the southern Amazonia transitional forests known as the Arc of deforestation. Our resul…

  • Hands-On Times, Adherence to Recommendations and Variance in Execution among Three Different CPR Algorithms

Open Access•Sami W Rifai, Sami Rifai et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Compared to current ILCOR guidelines, two alternative CPR algorithms advocating cycles of uninterrupted chest compressions resulted in very similar hands-on times, fewer deviations from targets, and less within-team and between-team variance in execution

  • Coupling of El Niño events and long-term warming leads to pervasive climate extremes in the terrestrial tropics

Open Access•Sami W Rifai, Sihan Li et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major driver of seasonal and interannual climatic variability across the tropics. The 2015/16 El Niño event was one of the strongest El Niño events of the past century. Here we characterize the meteorological impacts of the 2015/16 El Niño event upon the terrestrial tropics, and place the severity of this event into context of previous strong events in 1982/83 and 1997/98. Strong drought-inducing meteo…

  • The structures underpinning vulnerability

Open Access•A Morel, Mark Hirons et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Smallholder farmers dependent on rain-fed agriculture are particularly vulnerable to extreme climate events and, therefore, it is necessary to identify adaptive measures that would increase farmer resilience to these shocks. The management options in a low-input system, like forest coffee ( Coffea arabica ), are limited and there are several factors out of farmers’ control driving their vulnerability to changing climatic conditions. These can rel…

  • Vulnerability of Amazon forests to storm-driven tree mortality

    Open Access•Robinson Negrón‐Juárez, Jennifer A Holm et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Tree mortality is a key driver of forest community composition and carbon dynamics. Strong winds associated with severe convective storms are dominant natural drivers of tree mortality in the Amazon. Why forests vary with respect to their vulnerability to wind events and how the predicted increase in storm events might affect forest ecosystems within the Amazon are not well understood. We found that windthrows are common in the Amazon region exte…
