  • Biological relationship between central and South American Chibchan speaking populations

    Open Access•Phillip E Melton, Ignacio Briceño et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2007•Citada por: 7•Referências: 75

We examined mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup and haplotype diversity in 188 individuals from three Chibchan (Kogi, Arsario, and Ijka) populations and one Arawak (Wayuú) group from northeast Colombia to determine the biological relationship between lower Central American and northern South American Chibchan speakers. mtDNA haplogroups were obtained for all individuals and mtDNA HVS‐I sequence data were obtained for 110 samples. Resulting seque…

  • Genetic structure of the Aleuts and Circumpolar populations based on mitochondrial DNA sequences

Open Access•Mark Zlojutro, Rohina Rubicz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Citada por: 13•Referências: 71

The mtDNA variation of 198 Aleuts, as well as North American and Asian populations drawn from the literature, were analyzed to reconstruct the Aleuts' genetic prehistory and to investigate their role in the peopling of the Circumarctic region. From median‐joining network analysis, three star‐like clusters were identified in the Aleuts within the following subhaplogroups: A3, A7 (an Aleut‐specific subclade of A3), and D2. Mismatch analyses, neutra…

  • MtDNA Variation in the Altai-Kizhi Population of Southern Siberia

    Christine Phillips-Krawczak, Eric J Devor et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2006•Citada por: 4•Referências: 4

The native peoples of Gorno Altai in southern Siberia represent a genetically diverse population and have been of great interest to anthropological genetics. In particular, the southern Altaian population is argued to be the best candidate for the New World ancestral population. In this study we sampled Altai-Kizhi from the southern Altaian village of Mendur-Sokkon, analyzed mtDNA RFLP markers and HVS-I sequences, and compared the results to othe…

  • Transmissible and nontransmissible components of anthropometric variation in the Alexanderwohl Mennonites

    Open Access•Eric J Devor, Matt Mcgue et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1986•Citada por: 12•Referências: 25

A study of the intergenerational transmissibilities of 34 anthropometric measures from the Alexanderwohl Mennonite congregations of Kansas and Nebraska is presented. Results presented tend to confirm the suggestion made previously by us (Devor et al., 1985) that patterns of transmissibility conform to a concept of “functional multifactorial complexes” operating in the body in a way analogous to the “field” concept of dental morphology

  • Transmissible and nontransmissible components of anthropometric variation in the Alexanderwohl Mennonites

    Open Access•Eric J Devor, Matt Mcgue et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1986•Citada por: 7•Referências: 24

Data on 34 anthropometric measures from the Alexanderwohl Mennonite congregations of Kansas and Nebraska are presented. A factor analysis of these traits shows that body length and body width measures are distinct from each other as well as from measures of the head and face. Moreover, familial correlations estimated by maximum likelihood for all 34 traits tend to separate from each other along factor lines with correlations for body lengths bein…

  • Family resemblance for normal pulmonary function

    Open Access•Eric J Devor, M H Crawford•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1984

Family resemblance for normal pulmonary function as measured by forced vital capacity and one second forced expiration volume is assessed using a path analysis model which incorporates sex differences in transmissibility of the phenotype from parents to offspring as well as in the effect of a correlated shared-sibling environment. Application of this model, called XTAU, to familial correlations indicates that transmissible factors, which may be g…

  • A commingling analysis of quantitative neuromuscular performance in a Kansas Mennonite community

    Open Access•Eric J Devor, M H Crawford•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Citada por: 1•Referências: 7

The method of commingling analysis is applied to distributions of six quantitative neuromuscular traits. Results show that only two of these traits may be described by the single normal distribution commonly associated with quantitative variables. The remaining four traits show significant skewness which is best accounted for by a mixture of three component distributions. The pattern of commingling found suggests the presence of a major ( megaphe…

  • Family resemblance for neuromuscular performance in a Kansas Mennonite community

    Open Access•Eric J Devor, M H Crawford•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Citada por: 2•Referências: 12

Familial phenotypic resemblance for six quantitative neuromuscular performance traits is analyzed by path analysis using data from the Mennonite community of Goessel, Kansas. Of the six traits only one, dominant hand strength, shows no evidence of parent‐offspring transmission (t 2 = 0.001) and only one, trunk flexibility, shows evidence of a high degree of transmissibility (t 2 = 0.662). The four remaining traits display low to moderate levels o…

  • Marital structure and genetic heterogeneity of Ramea Island, Newfoundland

    Open Access•Eric J Devor, M H Crawford et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1983•Citada por: 3•Referências: 11

The population structure of Ramea Island, Newfoundland, is described using surname, marital migration, and serological data. Results presented indicate that Ramea is an open and heterogeneous population. It is shown, however, that this contemporary characterization has a time depth of only three decades and has resulted from a rapid population response to a single historical/economic event

  • Neural-tube defects in a prehistoric south-western Indian population

    Open Access•Eric J Devor, Linda S Cordell•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1981

Concern with the frequency and patterning of the occurrence of midline neural-tube defects among contemporary human populations is widespread. These defects are, however, quite old and occur in unusually high numbers of prehistoric skeletons. A common explanation offered for such high incidence has been inbreeding among small, reproductively isolated populations. In a sample of 54 skeletons from the prehistoric south-western Indian site of Tijera…

  • Population structure of Alaskan and Siberian indigenous communities

    Open Access•M H Crawford, J H Mielke et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1981•Citada por: 13•Referências: 16

Genetic data consisting of 14 red cell antigen groups and 11 serum and erythrocytic protein marker systems from four Eskimo populations of the Norton Sound area of Alaska are reported. The population structure of these four groups is analyzed both separately and within the larger context by comparison to 15 other circumpolar groups. These analyses reveal a good fit between genetic structure, geographic distribution, linguistic affiliation, and th…

  • Marital structure and genetic isolation in a rural Hispanic population in Northern New Mexico

    Open Access•Eric J Devor•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1980•Citada por: 7•Referências: 10

An investigation of the mating structure of the rural Hispanic population of the village of Abiquiu in northern New Mexico was carried out using village marriage registers. Marital movement and departure from random mating were analyzed by the distribution of birth places of marriage partners and by surname isonymy. The time periods studied were 1882 to 1910 and 1947 to 1977. The results of these analyses show marked marital isolation (median mar…

  • Population structure and admixture in transplanted Tlaxcaltecan populations

    Open Access•M H Crawford, Eric J Devor•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1980•Citada por: 9•Referências: 11

The history of the Indian populations from the Valley of Tlaxcala since the Spanish conquest of Mexico has been one of fission and transplantation. A number of Tlaxcaltecan families were relocated by the Spanish and founded new communities such as Saltillo and Cuanalan outside the Valley of Tlaxcala. The contemporary genetic structure of these people reflects their ethnohistory. Genetic distances between Tlaxcaltecan groups are the result of diff…

  • Genetic variation in transferrin alleles of rhesus macaques, Macaca mulatta
