Organic Carbon Controls Mercury Distribution and Storage in the Surface Soils of the Water-Level-Fluctuation Zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, China
The particular condition of the water-level-fluctuation zone (WLFZ) in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the largest hydroelectric reservoir in China, raises great concerns about mercury (Hg) contamination and ecological risk. In addition, previous research found that soil organic carbon (SOC) plays an essential role in controlling Hg distribution and speciation. However, there is minimal information on the Hg storage distribution and their relat…
Distribution of Mercury and Methylmercury in Farmland Soils Affected by Manganese Mining and Smelting Activities
Manganese (Mn)-related activities would affect the mercury (Hg) cycling in farmlands, whereas this was not well understood. Here, one of the largest Mn ores in China was selected to study the effects of Mn-related activities on the accumulation and distribution of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in farmland soils. The soil THg concentrations in the mining area were 0.56 ± 0.45, 0.56 ± 0.45, 0.53 ± 0.44, and 0.50 ± 0.46 mg kg−1 in the 0−10…
The Bioaccumulation and Biodegradation of Testosterone by Chlorella vulgaris
In the present study, the accumulation and degradation of testosterone by Chlorella vulgaris were studied. The results showed that C. vulgaris has a significant ability to eliminate testosterone by bioaccumulation and biodegradation, and during the 96 h experimental period, the data demonstrated that the accumulation of testosterone followed a sigmoidal accumulation pattern. At the end of the experiment, the bioconcentration percentages of testos…
Methyl and Total Mercury in Different Media and Associated Fluxes in a Watershed Forest, Southwest China
Mercury (Hg) deposition in the forest ecosystem is a significant source of input for methyl Hg (MeHg) and total Hg (THg) to the subtropical forest field and downstream aquatic systems. Wet deposition, litterfall, runoff, and fluxes with forest soil percolate of MeHg and THg were sampled for two years in a watershed forest of southwest China. Results showed that the depositions of THg and MeHg through litterfall and throughfall were 86 μg m -2 yr …
