The Role of Cognates and Language Distance in Simultaneous Bilingual Children's Productive Vocabulary Acquisition
This study examined the influence of cognate status and language distance on simultaneous bilingual children's vocabulary acquisition. It aimed to tease apart effects of word-level similarities and language-level similarities, while also exploring the role of individual-level variation in age, exposure, and nontarget language proficiency. Children simultaneously acquiring two closely related languages (n = 203) or two more distant languages (n = …
Cross-linguistic influence in the simultaneous bilingual child's lexicon
In a between-language lexical priming study, we examined to what extent the two languages in a simultaneous bilingual child's lexicon interact, while taking individual differences in language exposure into account. Primary-school-aged Dutch–Greek bilinguals performed a primed picture selection task combined with eye-tracking. They matched pictures to auditorily presented Dutch target words preceded by Greek prime words. Their reaction times and e…
Cognate facilitation in single- and dual-language contexts in bilingual children’s word processing
We examined the extent to which cognate facilitation effects occurred in simultaneous bilingual children’s production and comprehension and how these were modulated by language dominance and language context. Bilingual Dutch-German children, ranging from Dutch-dominant to German-dominant, performed picture naming and auditory lexical decision tasks in single-language and dual-language contexts. Language context was manipulated with respect to the…
Structural priming and cross-linguistic influence in L2 comprehension of Dutch relative clauses and PP-attachments
Aims and Objectives/Purpose/Research Questions: This study investigated cross-linguistic influence and structural priming in L2 learners’ comprehension of Dutch relative clauses (RCs) and PP-attachments. While PP-attachments are structurally ambiguous in all three languages, RCs are structurally ambiguous in Dutch and German, but not in English. Design/Methodology/Approach: L1 speakers of German ( n = 18) and English ( n = 19) completed a structu…
Structural priming of code-switches in non-shared-word-order utterances
Code-switching is generally dispreferred at points of non-shared word order across a bilingual's two languages. In priming studies, this dispreference persists even following exposure to a code-switched non-shared-word-order utterance. The present study delves deeper into the scope of code-switching priming by investigating whether lexical repetition across target and prime, a factor known to boost structural priming, can increase code-switching …
Cross-linguistic influence in simultaneous and early sequential bilingual children
Although cross-linguistic influence at the level of morphosyntax is one of the most intensively studied topics in child bilingualism, the circumstances under which it occurs remain unclear. In this meta-analysis, we measured the effect size of cross-linguistic influence and systematically assessed its predictors in 750 simultaneous and early sequential bilingual children in 17 unique language combinations across 26 experimental studies. We found …
Individual variation in the structure of bilingual grammars
A How to calculate harmony A.1 In a monolingual grammarThe calculation of harmony in a GSC framework minimally involves one set of parameters: the weights assigned to each constraint. To calculate the harmony of each potential output, the violations of each constraint associated with each output are multiplied by their respective constraint's weight, and the negative sum of the weighted violations is the harmony. Thus, in the toy grammar in Table 1…
Individual variation in the structure of bilingual grammars
A bilingual’s two languages can interact in their mind, but the mechanism of this interaction is \nstill open to debate. In this article we employ a variant of gradient symbolic computation \n(GSC; Smolensky et al. 2014) to model the code-switched utterances of unbalanced Dutch-English bilinguals. We aimed to evaluate GSC as an appropriate architecture to model bilingual \ncode-switching grammars, and to explore the extent of variability within a…
Structural Priming, Levels of Awareness, and Agency in Contact-Induced Language Change
This paper focuses on structural priming, levels of awareness, and agency in contact-induced language change, bringing insights from historical and anthropological linguistics together with psycholinguistic, processing-based approaches. We begin with a discussion of the relation between levels of awareness and agency in the linguistic literature, focusing on the work of Von Humboldt, Silverstein, Van Coetsem, and Trudgill. Then we turn to the psy…
Electrophysiological and experimental-behavioral approaches to the study of intra-sentential code-switching
A hallmark of bilingual language processing is intra-sentential code-switching. An emergent body of research seeks to understand the intricate neural and cognitive mechanisms that underlie this seemingly effortless skill. In this paper, we discuss electrophysiological and experimental-behavioral research approaches that have been used to study intra-sentential code-switching, and illustrate the use of these techniques by discussing a select numbe…
