Traditionally, even when the police have arrested suspected spouse abusers, prosecutors have been reluctant to follow through with prosecution. This article describes the multiple efforts made by abused women to seek help. Based on detailed interviews with 419 abused women, the analysis shows that only a very small number have failed to seek assistance. Most of the women have used a variety of sources, including lawyers, counselors, ministers, magistrates, shelters, and, most often, the police. Demographic analysis shows that relationship is the strongest and most consistent predictor of…

The Impact of Divorce upon Clergy Career Mobility
This study investigates differences in career patterns between 157 divorced and 174 niondivorced clergy qf the Presbyterian Church in the United States. The data, obtained through mailed questionnaires, suggest that divorce does not obviate a ministerial career. It does, however, constitute a disruption and makes it likely that a divorced clergyman will move more often, hold positions outside of the normatively prescribed parish ministry, and hav…

The Significance of Marital Status for Morale and Life Satisfaction among Lower-Income Elderly
Survey data obtained from 893 very low-income elderly is presented utilizing a poverty, low-income dichotomy. The relationships between income level, sex and marital status are explored for a variety of items related to morale and life satis,faction. It is concluded that either sex or marital status differences may have significant influence on the elderly person's life satisfaction above a poverty level, but neither is important below the povert…
The Functional Significance of Conjugal Communication in a Transitional Society
Revealed Difference data on 45 Filipino couples is utilized to demonstrate that the amount, type of resolution, and quality of, conjugal communication processes varies with the type of issue being discussed. Three issue-areas were investigated: family obligations, husband-wife problems, and parent-child problems.
