Masculinities, Citizenship and Right-Wing Populism in Australia
In the settler-colonial context of Australia, this paper addresses the specific framing of masculinity with which right-wing populism seeks to engage. It reports on a recent online survey completed by 335 men. Their written responses pointed to troubles in their lives, including difficult relationship and career circumstances. Denying the persistence of racism and its impact on racially and culturally marginalised communities remains a key feature of how contemporary racism manifests. This denial is facilitated and reinforced by, among other factors, racialised hierarchies and power imbalances that suppress public expressions of lived experiences with racism, often rendering these voices unheard in the public discourse.
