  • Fairness Perceptions in Demographic Targeting

    Open Access•Franklin Shaddy, Elizabeth M S Friedman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2025

Deciding which customer segment(s) to serve, or targeting, is a cornerstone of marketing strategy. While companies commonly target based on demographic characteristics, recent cultural movements (e.g., #MeToo, Black Lives Matter) have heightened sensitivity to the differential treatment of certain demographic groups. Yet research to date has not examined whether demographic targeting itself seems fair or appropriate. Fourteen experiments (N = 9,3…

  • A quantitative study of non-linearity in storytelling

    Open Access•Andrew Piper, Olivier Toubia•ARTICLE•Poetics•2023•Citada por: 2•Referências: 25

In this paper, we present a study of non-linearity in storytelling in a collection of 2,348 books published since 2001 that are divided among 10 different categories. We employ word embeddings to capture the semantic non-linearity of a book, along with three associated measures called speed, volume, and distance. We find that narrative non-linearity is strongly associated with the communication of non-instrumental (imaginary) information, but onl…

  • Online Advertising Suppresses Visual Competition during Planned Purchases

Open Access•Ralf Van Der Lans, Rik Pieters et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 70

Online advertising can help consumers to implement their purchase intentions on shopping websites. This research tests the hypothesis that online advertising can speed-up product search by visually suppressing competing products rather than by enhancing the target product on websites that lack a systematic visual organization. First, a survey shows that searching for products on a shopping website after having clicked on an online ad is a common …

  • Profiling Victims of Investment Fraud

Open Access•Marguerite Deliema, Doug Shadel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 32

Millions of Americans are targeted by investment scams, resulting in billions of dollars lost each year. Previous research indicates that investment fraud victims are more likely to be male, white, and married, and to have higher socioeconomic status compared to the general US population, but little research examines what behaviors and mindsets differentiate them from other investors. A telephone survey was administered to 214 investment fraud vi…

  • How Am I Doing? Perceived Financial Well-Being, Its Potential Antecedents, and Its Relation to Overall Well-Being

    Open Access•Richard G Netemeyer, Dee Warmath et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2018•Citada por: 68•Referências: 67

Though perceived financial well-being is viewed as an important topic of consumer research, the literature contains no accepted definition of this construct. Further, there has been little systematic examination of how perceived financial well-being may affect overall well-being. Using consumer financial narratives, several large-scale surveys, and two experiments, we conceptualize perceived financial well-being as two related but separate constr…
