  • How do Indigenous peoples define health? A systematic review of definitions across Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United States

    Open Access•Laura Gemmell-Sinnott, Malene Laugesen et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2026

  • Indigenous rights and managed public land

    Robin Quigg, Els Russell•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2026

This research critically examines the extent to which the Reserves Act 1977, the primary legislative framework governing many parks and reserves, especially those associated with territorial local authorities, aligns with and upholds Indigenous Māori values and rights guaranteed under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi. Using Critical Tiriti Analysis (CTA), a methodological approach developed by Indigenous Māori scholars, we assess the …

  • Framing nico-colonialism and nico-genocide

Open Access•Richard Maddox, Rohan M Telford et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2026

Background: Commercial tobacco and nicotine harms are often framed as issues of individual behaviour, product risk, or disease burden. Such framings can obscure the settler colonial and corporate structures that produce and sustain structural inequities and disproportionate harms among Indigenous peoples. Aim: This critical essay (re)frames the commercial tobacco and nicotine industry as a structural mechanism of settler colonial violence, contri…

  • A scoping review exploring the relationships between Indigenous peoples and parks and reserves

Els Russell, Robin Quigg et al.•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2025

  • Initiating decolonization

Open Access•Robin Quigg, Fran Kewene et al.•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2023

The board game, The Last Straw!, is part of the Aotearoa (New Zealand) public health and medical curriculum at the University of Otago. An engaging and effective teaching tool about the social determinants of health, the game falls short by being silent about Indigenous experiences. A project is underway to adapt The Last Straw! for play following an Indigenous framework, kaupapa Māori (Māori (Indigenous people of Aotearoa) approach). The game bo…

  • Is the neighbourhood context important for a tobacco retailer proximity policy

    Open Access•Louise Marsh, Ella Iosua et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2023•Referências: 3

A spatial modelling approach was used to explore how a proximity limit (150 m, 300 m, and 450 m) between tobacco retailers may impact different neighbourhoods in New Zealand. Neighbourhoods were categorised into three density groups (0, 1-2, 3+ retailers). As the proximity limit increases, there is a progressive redistribution of neighbourhoods in the three density groups with, the 3+ density group incorporating fewer neighbourhoods and the 0 and…

  • What impact would tobacco retailer proximity limit have on tobacco availability in New Zealand

Open Access•Louise Marsh, Crile Doscher et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2022

A proximity limit of 450 m would reduce retailers by 58%, but would not reach proposed critical behaviour-change threshold of 90%-95% required to reduce smoking prevalence independently. There is a need for a combination of policies, which focus on promoting equity, to achieve this bold endgame goal

  • Relationships between Dietary Patterns and Indices of Arterial Stiffness and Central Arterial Wave Reflection in 9–11-Year-Old Children

Open Access•Pouya Saeedi, Jillian J Haszard et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2020

Arterial stiffness is an important marker of vascular damage and a strong predictor of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Given that pathophysiological processes leading to an increased arterial stiffness begin during childhood, the aim of this clustered observational study was to determine the relationship between modifiable factors including dietary patterns and indices of aortic arterial stiffness and wave reflection in 9-11-year-old children. Dat…

  • Is the tobacco ‘footfall’ argument justified for tobacco purchases in New Zealand convenience stores

Louise Marsh, Claire Cameron et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2020

Our results do not support claims that tobacco drives one-quarter of footfall into stores or that customers who purchase tobacco spend almost twice as much as non-tobacco customers. Combined purchases of tobacco and non-tobacco items constituted 5.5% of transactions; the impact on a store's profitability of removing tobacco sales is unknown and could be the focus of future research

  • Factors contributing to high PhD completion rates

Rachel Spronken-Smith, Claire Cameron et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2018

This exploratory study determined PhD completions at a research-intensive university in New Zealand and considered factors affecting PhD completions. Completion data were calculated for PhD cohorts at the University of Otago from 2000 to 2012 (n = 2770) and survival models determined whether gender, enrolment status, age at admission, citizenship, scholarship status and academic field influenced completion. The impact of the doctoral programme an…

  • The impact of an increase in excise tax on the retail price of tobacco in New Zealand

Louise Marsh, Claire Cameron et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2015

Tobacco companies do not appear to be increasing the RRPs of budget brands in line with tobacco excise tax increases. The increasing price differential between budget brands, and mainstream and premium brands may undermine cessation and impede realisation of New Zealand's Smokefree 2025 goal

  • Is the food environment surrounding schools associated with the diet quality of adolescents in Otago, New Zealand
