What are human rights? Although legal scholars point to a growing list of international entitlements, social scientists have highlighted underlying ideological assumptions and the selective interpretation of human rights in practice. Epistemological Vigilance as Ethnographic Practice
With "In Praise of 'Thick Construction,'" Loïc Wacquant offers a welcome manifesto for ethnography infused with Bourdieusian epistemology. Transnationalizing Reception
While national reception contexts formatively shape immigration possibilities and experiences, we argue that transnational racial dynamics play an underappreciated role. Juxtaposing two independent ethnographies of the U.S. resettlement program and Brazilian asylum system, we show that Congolese refugees encounter strikingly similar racialized logics of reception as they move through these formerly distinct national institutions. In an effort to provide a framework for the accurate identification of elasmobranchs, driven in large part by the needs of parasitological studies, a comprehensive survey of DNA sequences derived from the mitochondrial NADH2 gene was conducted for elasmobranchs collected from around the world.
