Relationship between Humor in Introductory Textbooks and Students' Evaluations of the Texts' Appeal and Effectiveness
In a field study, 180 naive students evaluated a randomly assigned chapter in an introductory textbook as to its interest level, enjoyableness, persuasiveness, credibility, capacity for teaching, and its potential to encourage more reading. Next the chapters were content analyzed by 90 pairs of students for humor content. Following the content analysis, 90 correlation coefficients were computed between the frequencies and types of humor utilized …

A Survey of Recent Marriage and Family Texts
Introduction Textbooks provide an interesting opportunity to feel the pulse of a field of study. It has even been argued that texts reflect the paradigmatic status of normal science (Kuhn, 1970). With these thoughts in mind, we have prepared a comparative review of nearly two dozen recent textbooks in the field of marriage and family studies.
