BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the mental health of university students. • Comparison of depressive symptoms and eating behaviors among Japanese university students with subthreshold depression before and during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Yoshie Miyake, Koki Takagaki et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our results suggest that not only depressive but also bulimic symptoms should have been monitored among university students with subthreshold depression during the pandemic. Attention to stress-coping behaviors may be important for interventions to prevent the deterioration from subthreshold depression to clinical depression during a pandemic. However, the results could have been affected by many other factors, and further research is required

  • Epidemiology of anorexia nervosa in Japanese adolescents

Open Access•Mari Hotta, Reiko Horikawa et al.•ARTICLE•BioPsychoSocial Medicine•2015

BACKGROUND: No epidemiologic survey examining eating disorders in Japan has been done at a national level since 1992. The prevalence of anorexia nervosa, as assessed by questionnaires to hospitals, is thought to be underestimated because patients with anorexia nervosa tend to avoid consultations. In conformity with the School Health and Safety Act of Japan, schools are required to have physicians perform a medical examination of students every ye…

  • Psychological and weight-related characteristics of patients with anorexia nervosa-restricting type who later develop bulimia nervosa

Open Access•Hiroki Nishimura, Gen Komaki et al.•ARTICLE•BioPsychoSocial Medicine•2008

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa-restricting type (AN-R) sometimes develop accompanying bulimic symptoms or the full syndrome of bulimia nervosa (BN). If clinicians could predict who might change into the bulimic sub-type or BN, preventative steps could be taken. Therefore, we investigated anthropometric and psychological factors possibly associated with such changes. METHOD: All participants were from a study by the Japanese Genetic Re…
