  • Plosive voicing in Afrikaans

    Open Access•Andries W Coetzee, Patrice Speeter Beddor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2018•Citada por: 22•Referências: 45

This study documents the relation between f0 and prevoicing in the production and perception of plosive voicing in Afrikaans. Acoustic data show that Afrikaans speakers differed in how likely they were to produce prevoicing to mark phonologically voiced plosives, but that all speakers produced large and systematic f0 differences after phonologically voiced and voiceless plosives to convey the contrast between the voicing categories. This pattern …

  • The time course of individuals' perception of coarticulatory information is linked to their production

Open Access•Patrice Speeter Beddor, Andries W Coetzee et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2018•Citada por: 16

Understanding the relation between speech production and perception is foundational to phonetic theory, and is similarly central to theories of the phonetics of sound change. For sound changes that are arguably perceptually motivated, it is particularly important to establish that an individual listener's selective attention—for example, to the redundant information afforded by coarticulation—is reflected in that individual's own productions. Thi…
