A multivariate probabilistic framework for tracking the regional tropical edges
In the present study, a multivariate probabilistic framework is used to identify the meridional positions of regional tropical edges (RTEs), which are based on two variables: sea level pressure and precipitation minus evaporation. This new defined metric effectively captures inter-annual variability and long-term trend of the commonly adopted zonal mean tropical edge based on meridional mass stream function and near-surface winds. Besides, pronou…
Contribution of the deepened Amundsen sea low to the record low Antarctic sea ice extent in February 2022
The annual minimum Antarctic sea ice extent (SIE) in February 2022 hits a record low in the satellite era, with less than 2 million square kilometres observed on 25 February 2022, contrasting with the slightly positive trend in the Antarctic SIE prior to 2014. However, the preceding Amundsen Sea Low (ASL) in austral spring 2021 was the deepest since 1950. According to a linear regression model, the very low ASL contributed about 60% to the record…
Concurrent hot extremes and high ultraviolet radiation in summer over the Yangtze Plain and their possible impact on surface ozone
Hot extremes, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and surface ozone all have prominent effects on human health and ecosystems. Here we show evidence that both hot extremes and high surface UV radiation at noon time occur concurrently in summer over the Yangtze Plain. Composite analysis suggests that hot extremes in summer are primarily caused by the westward extension of the Western Pacific Subtropical High, which leads to less clouds and consequently mo…
Stratospheric ozone loss-induced cloud effects lead to less surface ultraviolet radiation over the Siberian Arctic in spring
Surface ultraviolet (UV) radiation has important effects on human health, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and air pollution. Both stratospheric ozone and clouds are key factors that influence surface UV radiation. Here we find that Arctic ozone loss may lead to a decrease in surface UV radiation over the Siberian Arctic in spring using ERA5 reanalysis. It is found that Arctic ozone loss is associated with an increase in high clouds by modifyi…
Variations in North Pacific sea surface temperature caused by Arctic stratospheric ozone anomalies
Recently, observations and simulations have shown that Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO) variations affect the middle-high latitude tropospheric climate in the Northern Hemisphere. In particular, a connection from the ASO to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has been reported. However, no detailed study has been made of a key process in the connection, the influence of ASO on the North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) and its underlying mec…
Increase of surface solar irradiance across East China related to changes in aerosol properties during the past decade
Previously, it was widely documented that an overall decrease in surface solar radiation occurred in China at least until 2005, in contrast to the general background of ‘global brightening’. Increased anthropogenic aerosol emissions were speculated to be the source of the reduction. In this study, we extend the trend analysis to the most recent decade from 2005–2015 and find that surface solar radiation has shifted from ‘dimming’ to ‘brightening’…
A connection from Arctic stratospheric ozone to El Niño-Southern oscillation
Antarctic stratospheric ozone depletion is thought to influence the Southern Hemisphere tropospheric climate. Recently, Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO) variations have been found to affect the middle-high latitude tropospheric climate in the Northern Hemisphere. This paper demonstrates that the impact of ASO can extend to the tropics, with the ASO variations leading El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events by about 20 months. Using observation…
Revisiting the potential of melt pond fraction as a predictor for the seasonal Arctic sea ice extent minimum
The rapid change in Arctic sea ice in recent decades has led to a rising demand for seasonal sea ice prediction. A recent modeling study that employed a prognostic melt pond model in a stand-alone sea ice model found that September Arctic sea ice extent can be accurately predicted from the melt pond fraction in May. Here we show that satellite observations show no evidence of predictive skill in May. However, we find that a significantly strong r…
